A team working at the Shimao archaeological site in Shaanxi province made the discovery during a recent excavation of the citys Neolithic ruins, which are thought to date back to about 2,000BC, state broadcaster CCTV reported on Monday.
The beast-face patterns found in Shimao might have had a significant influence on the motifs of Chinas Bronze Age, Sun Zhouyong, president of the Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology, said in the report.
Researchers unearthed about 30 carvings at the site with designs similar to those found on the elaborately decorated bronze vessels of the Shang and Zhou dynasties (1600-256BC). While most of them featured a recurring geometric pattern, others were of monstrous faces, the report said.

Must have been heck being an interior designer back then.
FOUR THOUSAND years ago!
It simply staggers the mind.
I had the chance to visit the Chinese National Museum in Taiwan (stuff rescued from China before the Reds took over). It was unbelievable some of the pottery, statues and carvings from 5,000 BC, so 7,000 years ago! (Based on a quick review on the net).
Carved jade, etc. I had no idea people back then could do some of that work.
I was really amazed at those intricate balls of ivory, with all of the numerous layers of spheres within spheres and how old they were. A quick search shows to about 600 A.D.
(obviously not prehistorice - but still amazing.).
it is amazing and what a great opportunity you had!!
I am glad for you.
If China had gone in a straight line, instead of going back to square one too often after regime change, they would be SO technologically advanced.
It’s HARD to keep that straight line.
We’re having trouble after 250 years!!
And it sounds like it was rediscovered a couple of times.
Stunning overhead photo at the site.
China practiced human sacrifice??
I’ve NEVER ONCE HEARD of that.
I wonder how sure they are about that.
Though hard to account for 80 female skulls in one place!!
They ate altogether too much.
We were there a few years ago. They incredible displays of many beautiful and wonderful things. If you can’t go there, look at images on the web. Their archives must be incredible. Like most museums, only a small fraction of their collection is on display at any given moment.
