The remains of five people, probably two women and three children, were found in a bedroom in Pompeii on Wednesday.

The group probably took refuge in the bedroom in a desperate attempt to escape a shower of volcanic rocks that had filled the house, Pompeii director Massimo Osanna told ANSA.

"It's a shocking discovery, but also very important for the history of studies," Osanna said.

The skeletons were found in a house where a charcoal inscription was recently found backing the theory that the Mount Vesuvius eruption that destroyed the ancient Roman city took place in October of 79 AD, not August.

New excavations have taken place at the site, in the Regio V of Pompeii.

Disneys animated Hercules (circa 1996?). Had quite a few good chuckles. James Woods does the voice of Hades.

Weird that Hercules (who dates from Mycenaean Greek times) was using Roman numerals, but I'm just quibbling. :^D

I still wonder if any “new” ancient writings—lost save for mentions by other writers (as with the works of the philosopher Chryssipus), or even previously unknown authors—may yet come out of that library.

At the time, they may have been muttering about Vespasian, who had been in office for about 10 years at the time.

I wish the intellectual midgets of the 19th century had left the scrolls alone. They destroyed a significant fraction of the cache by attempting to unroll them. Well, we got four words out of that one. Let's keep doing what we're doing. The works known so far were otherwise unknown, if memory serves, and were all on Epicurean philosophy, oh boy. There's been recent groundless speculation that, since the house has now been found to have had two storeys, that the library also has a second storey, and will be filled with more scrolls.

Oddly enough (he joked) the Greeks didn't have a numbering system. Still don't, judging from their gubmint spending.

    “Hello, IX-I-I, there’s a volcano erupting.”
“Can you give me your street address?”
“Yes, I am at MMMMMMMMMMDCLXVIIII Emperor Augustus Parkway.”
“Can you repeat that?”
“No, the lava is approaching me, help, oh damn ...”
