Earlier this month, a Chevy dealer went online and discussed seeing a glimpse of the mid-engined Corvette. While that is exciting and not a surprise he also noted a performance-electric vehicle that is in development, adding it looked very much like a crossover. In March, Ford asked us to imagine a four-door Mustang SUV and we did. It also got us thinking. If Fords thinking of putting the name on an electric SUV, is Chevy following suit? So, what we have here is what such a performance -electric Chevy crossover could look like if the automaker decides to make it a Camaro. Itd be a tit for tat against Ford.
While the Camaro electric SUV doesnt have four doors like its Mustang counterpart, it does have the appearance of a shooting brake. Its probably the closest well get to a Camaro-like wagon anytime soon. But the rendering has all the markings of an electric crossover. Theres the solid grille because the usual combustion engine doesnt need all that air. Sorry, theres not Flowtie.
Gray plastic cladding along the bottom and around the wheel wells accentuates the increased ride height. That stuff is standard for todays crossover. Got to make it look tough, and rugged for the mall parking lot. Theres a small lip spoiler on the rear that does give the Camaro slightly sporty appearance. We doubt itll set any records around the Nürburgring anytime soon.
Just like the Mustang, electrification and hybrid powertrains are inevitable in the Camaro. However, taking an iconic nameplate and putting it on a crossover seems like an idea from the marketing department in hopes of selling something thats not a Camaro to former Camaro owners with a family to haul around. Mitsubishi did it with the Eclipse Cross, so its not out of the realm of possibilities. And Ford seems to be reading from the same book. Crossovers are selling, so why not make everything a crossover?
As of right now, this is just a rendering. If Chevys rumored performance-electric vehicle is a crossover, it may not even look remotely like a Camaro or this rendering. Then again, our rendering department certainly makes such a proposition look cool, especially with its two-door appearance.
BLASPHEMY,BLASPHEMY, BLASPHEMY !!!!!
BOOOOOO! The wussification of the American automobile continues.....
I still can’t deal with the 4 DOOR Dodge Charger. I had a 1968 Charger R/T.
IMO, if they don't want to sell sporty cars any more, let the nameplates fade away. Think up new, boring names for the new, boring vehicles.
Cadillac comes to mind.
That seems like automotive blasphemy, doesn’t it?
I stand alone here on FR that the electric car revolution is coming, not because of "green" but because it makes sense, quiet, smooth, fast, and soon the batteries will be stellar to make it happen. ( 2d gen solid state )
Note:
* "The Sun Flyer" 2 seat trainer that will be electric powered was test flown this past week w/ a battery that will be FAA approved w/ 260w/kg. That is more energy density than a Tesla, that is a big deal, no one sees it and denotes where we are headed.
* I am here in MI and yes you get the ethereal sense from reading the in the auto beltway media ( of which is now all on line as well ) that The Skateboard Concept is the way to go, aka batteries under the floorboard for a low center of gravity w/ an SUV type vehicle, and not just them all of them, aka the Tesla and the Chevy Bolt are already using this concept.
* If you look at the product cycles vehicles like this are being mentioned aka Volvo will have an all Electric sporty SUV in a couple of years, so you can see the talk of a Ford competitive entry is not without merit, or the wonks that look at what consumers will want in 2,3, or 5 yrs must be seeing this as a "want".
* In that regards it makes sense for a Mustang derived SUV, it means fun something that dad, mom and the kids will want to be in, which is part of the Tesla allure, FWIW, kids like the Tesla. It also takes an existing brand and makes it a line which may or may not where well over time.
My guess is w/ all the auto manufacturers wanting to save cost, using Mustang running gear (suspension) w/ a low center of gravity battery package ='s an SUV that may handle like a Go-Kart. What's not to like in that!
Back when Mustangs were first introduced, 1963, Ford had plans for a station wagon version.

Yes! I was going to bring up the 4 door Charger.
I knew two people from my HS years that owned 1965 Pontiac Tempest wagons. They were cool!
There is no doubt as to the speed of electric cars. I watched a street drag show where this guy had modified a Tesla,I think, and he was blowing away everyone quite easlily.
I still cant visualize driving an electric car in Chicago in the winter. Snow traffic tie ups. Bingo your out of power and heat.
What is interesting is Jag w/ their coming E-SUV has a heat pump taking the heat created when you draw juice and using it for heat and air and they are claiming 31% in energy use. Clever. Now would a heat pump work in the cold and wind on the Shoreline where the wind is a howelin’? I don’t know, to be continued. I know Long Johns and 3/4 wool coat didn’t keep me warm in that cold when I was their in winter!
SECURITY. THE GAS TANK WAS FARTHER AWAY....................

There is a role for electric vehicles. What is not liked is the government mandate regarding the situation.
Heck, there is even a role for ethanol. But the government makes it one size fits all, that is the problem with centralized government.
At the very least.
I preferred the first few years of the Cougar.
About 15 years ago, I had a 67 base model. It wound up being sacrificed to keep the peace and solve a problem or two.
The spouse didn’t care for the car.
I’ve told her that I will get another one someday and it will stay.
Nonstarter in both instances.
