GI Jews: Jewish Americans in World War II begins as many Holocaust documentaries do, with a history of the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany mixed with what is now standard archival footage of Brownshirts and Kristallnacht. Throw in interviews with some Jewish celebrities in this case, Carl Reiner and his friend Mel Brooks wearing his old Army jacket and it has all the workings of a typical PBS documentary.
But the film, which premieres April 11, on the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, quickly takes an unexpected turn. Jewish-American soldiers, the viewer learns, werent only fighting Nazis during the war they had to battle the anti-Semitic prejudice of many of their fellow soldiers.
All told, some 550,000 Jews served in World War II. A few had experienced anti-Semitism at home already in the form of Gentiles Only signs, for example, which were found at some public facilities across the country.

Of course it was less in the USA compared to Germany in the 30s and 40s
But note that prior to 1918, Germany was one of the best places for Jews to live. Jews in fact supported Germany rather than the Triple Entente (UK=France=Tsarist Russia) because the Tsars were violently anti-semitic and the Dreyfuss affair and casual british anti-semitism was orders worse than Germany

Are you equating neo-Nazis and Muslims? I would rethink that remark.

I would suggest you read the article and watch the documentary
In no way does it dishonour the greatest generation - brave, incredibly brave men like your father
It talks about an American NCO who in a German PoW camp told the germans that all of his men were Jews rather than giving up his fellow Americans for slaughter
It does talk about the casual racism that was still present -- but it does NOT villify America or Americans. It talks of what was - and how America was far less anti-s than other parts of the west and as we see, it changed so utterly after 1945

There are documentaries and stories about the Italian, Japanese, African American and Native Americans who fought and faced some discrimination — one example is of course Leon Uris’ “Battle Cry” (I hate to recommend stuff by Uris, but this is the only one I would recommend)_

Way back in the Old South there was so much prejudice against Jews that the Confederate Secretary of State was Jewish. Judah P. Benjamin did joke that he asked his parents why they named him “Judah” when they could have just branded “Jew” across his forehead.

read the article at least — it doesn’t say American soldiers were anti-semitic. it mentions incidents that were anti-semitic in tone (NONE violent) but also mentions brave Americans who fought any discrimination against their fellow Americans

Got any mirrors where you live?
Try this URL. I grew up in a neighborhood in NYC where we learned from each other but you may need some help.

Thanks. That is the problem. They did not watch it.
In 2002, I built a great room for a library. One and a half walls 24X8 for books. Half are WWII. I never thought I would fill it. Well, books are piling up again.
I like backing up with analog.

I was not aware of that about Secretary of State Benjamin. Thanks for this great piece of History.
I just watched Spielberg's movie about Lincoln. There was nothing else on. I find that his movies are as void of Historical Accuracy as the author of this thread.

errr.. Modern day "Jews" are a mix of people from the tribes of Judah,Benjamin, Simeon, Levi and also people from Manasseh, Issacher etc. who returned back after 300 years --> Jews are not ONLY descended from the tribe of Judah. At the time of the split of the north, the tribes of Simeon and Benjamin were absorbed by the larger tribe of Judah. There were also Levites
And the northern tribes were taken by Assyria in around 700 BC, and resettled in what is now Iraq. After the Iranian king, Cyrus the great let Hebrews go back, the ones who had not assimilated did and now you have 4 groups of people descended from these northern tribes:
- Peoples of Iraq and Western Iran who have part northern ancestry
- Peoples of Syria who had earlier admixtures with the northern tribes (like Zebulun, Dan etc.)
- Samaritans (yes they still exist)
- Jews who intermarried with them before and after the return
and of course people around the world will have some, SOME Jewish blood -- and no, the English don't have more Jewish blood than Iraqis...

Being born and raised in NYC or anywhere else for that matter is hardly something people have control over. Where and how we chose to live is.
Taking pills didn't make you a yenta. It takes practice.
There is nothing wrong with being a liberal (like Thomas Jefferson). It is the leftist totalitarian filth we have to keep our guard up for.

Don't like NYC or folks from it? Kind of like being an antisemitic miscreant.

True. But only people who were identified as 'Jews' by those who don't like them suffered over the past 3,700 of their 5,700 year history..
