All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

Posted on 02/26/2018 12:12:20 PM PST by CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

Re: HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A REVOLUTION?

My earlier post about reusing commercial pasta sauce jars for home canning brought something to mind.

Now is the time to learn the skills and try out the ideas, techniques and equipment we will need if/when we face a SHTF time.

Not sure about canning in recycled Classico pasta jars?
Try canning some now filled with water.

Got a new pressure canner?
Learn how to use it now while parts and replacements may still be available.

Haven't canned meat yet but want to know how - just in case?
Don't wait to learn how when the meat is scarce or irreplaceable.
Can some now to learn what works for you.

Not sure how to use mylar bags and oxygen absorbers to prepare things like beans, rice and pasta for long term storage?

Now is the time to learn by doing.

We’re watching the coup play out before our very eyes.

It’s been going on since obama took office, but has escalated exponentially over the last couple weeks to levels never imagined.

There’s a thread now saying that the 20,000 NG troops in DC have been authorized to use lethal force on civilians.

We are now in a full blown communist police state.

Vlad The InhalerVlad The Inhaler : "Got a new pressure canner?

Better yet , get at least one of the replacement rubber "sealer" rings now, maybe two.
Prepper rule on replacements :" when one is none, when two is one, when three is two, etc. (AKA : always have replacements" >

"Haven't canned meat yet but want to know how - just in case?
Don't wait to learn how when the meat is scarce or irreplaceable."
Get the "Ball Blue Book of Canning and Preserving",
it is the authority on canning, pickling, fermenting, dehydrating, etc..
Older copies are highly prized, although you might find them at a used book shop, Salvation Army, Charity Shops, or even in well stocked grocery stores.
Newer updated recipes are available; check your local library to see if they have a copy, and then evaluate to see if it meets your introductory needs.

I actually found wide mouth quart canning jars at Wal-Mart a coupe weeks ago.

They also had hot water bath canners.

Great ideas, Vlad and TIK.

Except for one thing, it appears preppers have been doing some shopping lately.

I recently went to emergency essentials and Honeyville grains, trying to get the weights of their beans, wheat and rice. The number 10 cans. Trying to see what kind of shelves to buy for the new house. He built the last ones but if I wait for him to build this next one’s it should take another five years. That’s how long it took for the ones I have now

The internet shelves were empty.

Now over the past few years I’ve seen the “fast” prepper food disappear. Pre-packaged meals and such. But not rice and beans and wheat.

It’s a little scary.

I was thinking about getting an All-American canner so I don’t have to worry about buying the sealing rings for my handy little presto. There are none to be found, at least in the places I looked.

I have a pressure canner that I use every winter to can meats which I buy on sale. I have at least 2 cases each of Chicken, pork, beef. The pork and beef is in pints, the Chicken is in quarts with bones-there’s a lot of nutrition and collagen in bones.

Shortly after buying the canner, I bought replacement parts for each item that can be replaced. I also have a water bath canner that I have used for 55 years.

It’s great to have all that meat needing no refrigeration. In addition, it is much more tender than by regular cooking methods and makes for fast meals. In a pinch it could be used right out of the jar.

I also bought at a sale a case of lids and rings.

I received a gift for Xmas of a pressure & air fryer-as advertised by Emeril. I haven’t had time to figure out how to use it, but also noted that the pressure feature also allows canning and not just meals.

Freezer also is stocked.

“We are now in a full blown communist police state.”

It seemed to happen almost overnight. They were ready.

More than ready.

And we weren’t.

The right’s big problem is not recognizing the left’s driving force beforehand. Too much giving them the benefit of the doubt and not being realistic about the depths of evil in them and behind them.

We quite simply, underestimated them.

“Or just ask here at FR.”

That brings up a topic I know little about.

And with the Ministry of Truth media banning any thoughts that are conservative, HOW do we communicate when internet options are limited? Even cell phones might be disabled for the conservative user.

We are targeted like the Jews were in Germany in the 30’s.

Old school. Snail mail, vetted courier, land line telephone, in person.

I think the most important thing is to blend in and not stand out. Nobody, except for a very trusted few, should know you are a conservative. Look and act like you are apolitical.

I’m in East Tennessee.

I’d stand out NOT wearing a Trump hat.

But I do keep my prepping to myself.

There is a wealth of great survival information at this site:

Canning supplies were in VERY short supply last year. Buy them when you see them, no matter where you are!

I will also recommend http://www.lehmans.com for all kinds of old-timey gadgets and things to make life easier. :)

They also offer a catalog: https://www.lehmans.com/catalog_request

Been playing the ‘Dumb Blonde’ when it comes to politics all of my adult life. ;) To any of my LibTard family members:

“Oh, you’re SO much smarter than me about this stuff. Explain it to me!”

And then I do the opposite. ;)

Lehman’s rocks!!!!

People want their Non-electric catalog, for living like our ancestors or the Amish, off the grid.

Wow there’s a lot of information there! I’ve never seen this one before.

If I really wanted to be prepared I would print all this stuff out. I’d probably go through a few printers.

Thank you, CottonBall. This will be a great thread. I would love to hear more about your pressure canner. Here’s to the skills that make us more independent.

I lived in East Tennessee for 20 years. Lots of people with old-time know-how in some parts.
