Vanity - What Brand of Riding Lawn Mower is Best?
My dark and forboding mind....... | 02/24/2018 | Red Badger

Posted on 02/24/2018 10:13:46 AM PST by Red Badger

Will have to buy a riding lawn mower soon.

Have never owned one.

42 Inch seem to be the right size for my yard.

Have no experience with any, so I ask for your comments and suggestions on what brand to look at and what to stay away from...........................

“That’s a garden tractor. He was asking about a lawn mower. You must be a salesman trying to upsell him into something he doesn’t want or need.”

You must be an idiot that doesn’t know the difference between a lawn tractor and a lawn mower. The X350 is a lawn mower, moron.

Describing green fandom as a “cult” is pretty accurate. That green paint and even Kubota orange will tend to command a higher price. It’s worth looking at other brands that are functionally and mechanically equal that can be had for less $$.

I can recommend ZTR. Slightly over-inflating the rear tires helps cut down on lawn damage from a hard turn. A lawn service guy I know has three Husqvarna ZTRs.. My neighbor next door also had one. Seemed like solid units.

I had to replace a blade drive bracket on the neighbor’s machine; the bearing froze. I attributed it to poor maintenance (never greased).

I cannot recommend my Simplicity (also sold as Craftsman) because of an electric clutch failure & poor deck level control.

I was just thinking of something.

About the only thing which never wears out on garden/lawn tractors is the engine. They seem to always outlast everything else.

If you go with a ZTR, which I would recommend, can’t beat Hustler. Built solid as a tank. The only disadvantage I have seen is that they don’t have a washout port where you can attach a hose to remove grass cuttings from the underside.

If you want to go cheap, buy one of these Snappers used. I had one & used it for ten years; it was already more than ten years old when I acquired it. I gave it away to a friend when I purchased my ZTR. He used it to carve a trail on his wooded property. Bulletproof!

I have a 42” Toro Zero Turn. It has been flawless for eight years until I retired from doing my own lawn. Still have it, though... and it still runs! I think I paid about $2500 for it.

My daughter and son-in-law have a Gravely on their farm. They mow a couple of acres every week (sometimes twice). It zips all over the place - she makes it look so easy. I tried it and it was too much for me....but she goes around those trees like nothing.

Kubota ... GR2120 (diesel)

Or step up to the BX Subcompact Tractor.

Lots of attachments and options.

If you can find a Graverly with attachments you could even farm!

Look around for features like a shaft drive. My neighbor has a Deer that is around 5 and he has it in the shop 3 to 5 times a year.

Stihl makes excellent equipment. I don’t have any experience with their mowers though.

“Wouldn’t he be ‘better off’ sleeping in, walk the 4 blocks and up the stairs.”

I could not agree with you more. There is a lot to be said for the “manual labor” workout. I mow 2 lawns which have total at least 1/2 acre with a push mower. I consider it part of my exercise program.

It does take some getting use to. Funny story, my very first time on my brand new Gravely 0-turn I was out near the road mowing around the culverts that ran under the driveway to our house. It was on a hill so I very carefully and slowly went up the hill trying to cut as closely to the steel culvert as possible and suddenly it seemed I was about to hit it and jerked the levers the wrong way and the whole mower passed over the culvert. All I could hear was the sound of metal blades hitting this hunk of steel...ruined them of course.

I remember pulling over and turning off the mower and sitting there damn near about to cry. My first day on my brand new $4000.00 mower!

Turned out okay though...had to change the blades of course.

John Deere. My JD broke after 14 years on a Saturday and I had to go get a mower on a short notice and went to Lowes and purchased a Husquervna which was a piece of junk. I bought another JD X-300 and its great. Cub cadets, Husquervnas, Lowes JD, and Troy Builts are for light work. If you really need a dependable mower, get a JD.

Having spoken from experience the 9N will gladly try to do anything......You just need to recognize that it can if you are careful. Like when I installed a round bale front end loader. It worked fine as long as you also picked up a round bale in the back to balance the load.
