A leading astronomer studying the origins of the space object known as Oumuamua has come out declaring its an alien probe with broken engines. Dr. Jason Wright claims that Oumuamuas movement is that of a craft that has lost power to its engines.
Right now, leading scientists are studying the odd cigar-shaped object which originated outside of our solar system. Teams lead by renowned physicist, Stephen Hawking, are attempting to discover whether or not Oumuamua is alien or natural. If a radio signal is detected later today, scientists will proceed with caution.
Professor Avi Loeb, Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University, sais: My recommendation, as in any dialogue, is that we first listen and do our best to understand what we are hearing. Once we figure this out, we can decide how to respond, he said. Overall, I am an optimist. I believe that a very intelligent civilization will be peaceful, and we could save ourselves millions or billions of years by learning from it. But there is also the possibility that such a civilization will have hostile intentions and risk our existence, so we should deliberate carefully in any future contact with them.
According to the Daily Mail, Dr. Wright from Penn State University is already declaring it a spacecraft. Oumuamua is about a quarter of a mile long, 260 feet wide, and currently traveling at 196,000 mph. Rather than moving through space like other natural space rocks, astronomers believe that it is tumbling through our solar system.
Such derelict craft would, if they are not traveling so fast that they escape the Galaxy, eventually thermalize with the stars and end up drifting around like any other interstellar comet or asteroid, Dr. Wright wrote in his blog. In fact, since they (presumably) no longer have altitude

How is the movement of a space craft without power distinguishable from a rock? Or, for that matter, the velocity of an unladen swallow?
I think Dr. Wright may have overlooked a second, very real possibility.
Rather than "broken" engines, it may have turned off its engines and attitude control. Possibly even deliberately tumbling in order to look more like a natural object.
If I were the captain of a spacecraft approaching a system with potential inhabitants of unknown capabilities and an equally unknown degree of hostility, I would do everything I could to appear non-hostile, either natural or a derelict.
They can turn the engines back on and come back for a second pass if everything in our system looks OK.
Surprisingly, there is a Dr Jason Wright (the first search hits were an OBGYN). In his own words, there’s no reason to think it isn’t a natural object:

It must be so, a “scientist” has spoken. The only way to get more credibility in the media would be if it was a woman scientist.
When it approached Earth, it only saw that American liberals had not only put the Obama administration in once, but actually two times.
The space probe determined, based on that sole observation, that all inhabitants of Earth were brain-dead morons; far too dangerous to interact with.
Agreed.
btw the first thing that a artificially intelligent computer network would do is:
Hide.
The second:
Learn.
Zentraedi Scout Ship. I hope the SDF1 is ready! We must move all ZiGs!
But not to worry. Sen. Kristin Gillibrand says it is swell
BTW, all, the Daily Mail’s wrong (I didn’t say lying), no surprise there, Dr. Wright doesn’t think it’s an ET craft. Also, he’s an Associate Professor, rather than a “leading astronomer”.

Does it have cup holders.
African or European?
SETI is passive.
...before it too goes as insane as its host.
True. But our earthly communications between ourselves is not. I dont know if Carl Sagans novel _Contact_ is considered passé now, but the premise is that aliens first observed us through broadcast communications.
A real tour-de-force about alien contact is Greg Costikyans _First Contract._
