My father always told us, “Watch where you step!”.
Advice that has saved us from numerous snake bites.

Didn't get this from my dad, but they are principles that I live by and have passed on to our now grown and gone sons:

Live for Christ and look for a godly woman/mate. Never date or marry a woman who doesn't know the Lord or one who knows the Lord but isn't living for Him. It will save you years of heartache and bring you years of joy.

"Buy it right the first time so you don't have to buy it again for a long time."

This principle applies to e v e r y t h i n g one has to purchase. Quality, isn't cheap, it costs more but it is well worth it in the long run. Thoroughly do your research/homework before purchasing a n y t h i n g and buy the best. If you can't afford it, save up until you can and then buy.

Most people buy items "on the cheap", it breaks, they have to purchase it again (and again) and by the time they are done they have paid more for junk that doesn't last over time and end up spending more than they would have for the quality item had they bought it right the first time.

"Choose your friends wisely and pour your life into 'faithful men'" (2 Timothy 2:2)

Best advice:
1. I cut it off twice and it’s still too short (in German). Good planning.
2. You need that like you need another hole in your head. Thrift.
3. Do NOT call your Mom “she.” Chivalry.
4. Enrolling me in a high school typing course. WAY before computers and from a guy who never touched a keyboard in his life!
5. Enrolling me in Junior Achievement in high school. That was my first introduction to the wonders of capitalism and entrepreneurialism.
6. Buying me a Popular Science subscription; buying me a Visible V8 model; keeping a good workshop — all gentle nudges to go into engineering for a career.
7. Having me help him at an early age with all sorts of home improvement projects and teaching the value of a dollar by paying me. Learning g the value of working with your hands.
8. Maybe the most important of all was watching Dad get so much out of life golfing, befriending everybody, crazy fun water skiing, poker with his buddies, being real nice to his in laws. He was everybody’s friend. People just loved having Dad around.

Worst advice
1. I was 27 in 1977 and had just paid $100,000 for my first house in Palo Alto, a 900 sq ft cracker box (including a one car garage) on 1/7 acre — “Son, that is the STUPIDEST thing you’ve ever done.” Dad had never paid more than $45,000 for a huge colonial on 3/4 acre.

He was a great guy...I often wish I could talk with him again. Lord, life is short.

We are going to visit Dad’s 96 year old brother in mid-July. They weren’t much alike, but I look forward to our visits with my uncle, the very last of that generation still alive.

My dad used to say I would never amount to anything because I was such a procrastinator. I would tell him, “just you wait and see”.

My dad (an old cowboy) told me to pay attention to how a man treats his horses. He said they would treat a wife the same. He was right.

Does the song “Pappa was a Rolling Stone” strike a chord with you?
I don’t ask that to be a wise-ass... that song always was a sad song to me.Does the song “Pappa was a Rolling Stone” strike a chord with you?

I seriously doubt it, since English was not his first language, but it was mine, together with Spanish; simultaneously.

God bless the Moravians. Even though I am Roman Catholic by tradition, and later confirmed by choice.
