My Dad passed away just about six months ago so this is the first Father’s Day without him.

The best advice I got he sent me in a letter when I was in college. His advice was when you get up in the morning expect the worse for the day and always have a backup plan in anticipation, on some days have a backup plan to the backup plan. That advice has stood me well as it did him.

Listen to me. Been there and done it the hard way. You listen and I will save you a lot of problems.

I did NOT, and he was RIGHT.

Dear Saxxon,

re: “Didn’t come from my father, but a good piece of advice I got was: “The first 40 hours you work every week pays the bills. It’s the hours you work after 40 that builds wealth.””

Another one from Dad:
‘40 hours = bread and butter ... over 40 hours pays for the jam to put on top of the butter!”

Don’t know about “best” ... many good things, some of which I may post later. But this one always stuck in my mind:

If you absolutely MUST get a tattoo, make sure it says something like ‘I Love Mom’. You’ll never be ashamed of that.

Your word is your bond, if your word means nothing then a contract signed by you is worthless.

Gambling is for fools, better to throw your money in the outhouse than give it to a gambler.

New and Improved is usually neither.

I was fortunate; None.

He was "successful" but irresponsible.
If I ever lived one day in his household, I have no memory of it.

I also learned about priorities in life:
.
“A good woman, a good meal and a good crap.....”

But...not in that order....

Sad to hear that.

Does the song “Pappa was a Rolling Stone” strike a chord with you?

I don’t ask that to be a wise-ass... that song always was a sad song to me.

It’s okay he was 93 and had lived a great life so no tears. I have been a little down the last few weeks but I will be fine. Two weeks ago was my birthday and that was a sad weekend.

I have so many great memories so he’s not really gone as he is always in heart and mind. Thank you.

" Mother advice: Don’t talk to your father until he has had something to eat."

Mine said, "thank your father because you have something to eat.
