The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from west Michigan. It’s been a gorgeous spring. Birds are everywhere. I planted my big lettuce-starting planter at Easter. Sprouting but slow. I keep it covered with a big plexiglas sheet. Picking up bone meal today and will till the garden a second time. Rain for 2 days coming up. Then we’ll put the compost pile on and till a third time in mid May before we plant. My San Marzanos are coming up nicely in the house. Biggest thing - all my 4 pawpaw trees made it through the winter, first time they did not get burlap treatment. They are as tall as me and I am hoping this is the year for fruit finally. Have a great gardening weekend everyone!

Unbelievable storm outside right now at 7:30 this morning. Rain gauge only shows 2 inches but there is a 5 gallon bucket 1/2 full? Pond is over the dam. Constant roar of thunder and getting DARK outside.

Is this the end? Where is Noah when we need him?

Continuing to suffer for my impatience.
I put new zucchini seedlings in the ground. Hopefully these will take. Out of about 100 spinach seeds I planted I maybe have 12 actual plants. But they are not dead yet. So there’s hope. The pepper seedlings will be able to go in the ground probably in another couple of weeks. I will need a new raised bed for them.

I’d love to be planting sweet corn this weekend, but we’re in the midst of a serious monsoon.

I had the pond almost pumped out in preparation to resume the cleanout and renovation project. Now the water is running out the cut in the dam.

The road I live on is under water in three places.

The puddles have puddles.

No bueno!!!

We have had almost non stop rain today, and repeated momentary power outages all day long. Have the candles, and oil lamps ready for tonight, if the electric goes off.

Wanted to plant taters this weekend, but weather is not co-operating.

I remember fondly the cistern that my grandparents had. Wish we had one now. But we are using an above ground pool to capture the rain from the roof since we don’t have a cistern.

I was never able to get hubby to plant a paw paw tree. He just always says, that’s a big tree, and it would take too long to get fruit.

I’ve never had one, so I don’t even know if I would like the taste, but since it’s native, I figured it would do well. I did read somewhere that the trees stink like old socks.

If you get fruit, you can let us know first hand about the smell and taste - OK?

Well, I think we have all been in the suffer from impatience stage at some point, so we have empathy for that. LOL

This past week has just SUCKED! Mother Nature is throwing a hissy-fit this week. Slushy snow, cool temps, and WIND like there’s no tomorrow!

I’ve been moving my tomato and pepper plants outside during the day, but the SUN isn’t even shining. Grrrr! They live on the Dining Room table at night...poor kittens!

We really haven’t been doing much outside, other than running between the house and the barn when forced to do chores!

Inside activities have included laundry, cleaning, painting the Pantry, and I started some more seedlings...though where I’ll go with them is anybody’s guess at this point!

Enough! Uncle! Mother Nature is so MEAN! She gets you all excited for Spring, then pulls the rug right out from under you and bops you on the head. ;)

This is ONLY my 56th Spring; I’m STILL not used to Spring in Wisconsin, LOL!

Will do. I’ve eaten many up until a few years ago. The flavor is out of this world. Creamy and sort of like banana and mango or papaya. Just unbelievably delicious.

Beets are VERY nutritious and are way tasty when pickled. Or Harvard beet style. People don’t respect the beet! The drawback to growing beets is that they are labor intensive to rinse clean, and they tend to stain things during processing.

They are very easy to grow and the baby greens are very nutritious.

LOL. I don’t think I would ever get used to spring that far north.

I was just looking at the weather map, and there is an enormous splotch of extreme weather extending from the Texas Panhandle all the way to the NE coast. It has been thunder, lightening, and power outages all day today, along with pouring buckets of rain.

We haven’t had tornadoes here yet, but I’m sure there are some all along this alley.

I’m going to be eating more of them for sure. I know that beet juice is supposed to be very effective for lowering blood pressure too.

I even like them just cooked and sprinkled with feta cheese, which is easier than pickling. I’m thinking that I’ll can them half of them pickled and half just plain with a little salt.

Yes, beet juice is good. I do it with carrots, celery and apple. Sounds weird, but tastes good. Pound for pound re nutrition - beets are a great crop. And easier and more forgiving than many veg. Great for a beginning gardener too.

Spring is gorgeous, but Spring can also be Deadly. If we can all make it to Thursday, we should be OK. ;)

Greetings from southern New Hampshire! Our bog filter is set up and ready for plants. I still need to rake and till the raised beds in Barb’s section of the garden. Her seedlings are going like gang busters!

I saved a goodly number of seeds from that Indian Squash I got from the tribe in Minnesota. They are dried and I plan to put them in my “Three Sisters” plots.

Weather has improved. Need to service my pertly stove for next year, but am going up to our trailer tomorrow to open it up and get it ready for opening day.

Typically I use a raw large peeled beet, 2 stalks of celery, 1 large or two small apples, and if I do carrots usually 2 medium or 3 small. I crush a bit of ice in as well. Sometimes a squeeze of honey. If I juice all that I take some of the pulp residue and add it to the juice and put it all into the bullet blender. Just to add back fiber and good stuff. Kinda of carb heavy, but I don’t do it too often. Sometimes throw a handful of spinach in the juicer too.
