Trump backs away from demand for border wall money (AP, but just a heads up, maybe...)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump stepped back Monday from demanding a down payment for his border wall in must-past spending legislation, potentially removing a major obstacle to a bipartisan deal just days ahead of a government shutdown deadline.

Trump told a gathering of around 20 conservative media reporters Monday evening that he would be willing to return to the wall funding issue in September, according to two people who were in the room. They spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the get-together, which was not originally intended to be on the record.

Trump is now in a world where making threats that he will never carry out is just a plain bad idea. Threaten to shut down gov and all they have to do is call the bluff. He’s not messing with some city council these days

What do you expext him to say? He is not going to build a wall until he decides to take the heat for it. Might as well start with a day 100 veto of CR

He needs to stop caving to the dems and use the leverage that he has.

Caving to them doesnt get you squat in the future. It only emboldens them

Yep. Congress will NEVER willingly give him money for the wall. Time to toughen up, take the heat, and do what he said he was gonna to do. But he likes good press a lot more than bad press.

I know. He’s messing with a totally corrupt & illegitimate federal gubbermint & media.

He’s had so many bad ideas...We need to replace him with a real leader like count copulot. An ineligible junior senator from canada with real leadership skills. He could get the job done, I’m sure of it. /s

Candor7: This is a Ryan sell out of the Trump agenda.

That doesn't preclude Trump selling out the Trump agenda as set forth during the campaign. I hope that's not the case, and Trump certainly merits enormous benefit of the doubt.

He cannot bluff his way to legislation. It’s that simple. Just veto the CR on day 100 and don’t move off of it. They’ll come around eventually. This is a test of will

He’s putting the heat on congress to do the right thing and fund the wall.

You don’t know how they will react, so shut your piehole.

It has noting to do with wanting to keep Obama care initiatives or ideology , that can be done with reasonable planning and taxation changes.

Flat wrong. The arithmetic simply does not add up. The mandates had to go.

Even if you are right in every respect, Trump is responsible because as president he got on board and he got on board because Ryan's bill was roughly in keeping with Trump's campaign.

Yes, Ryan is a stinkin' Rino but Trump chose to get under the covers with him.

Thanks.

But I say as loudly as I can, in a post, to President Trump:

BUILD THE WALL.

It is in my opinion, why you were elected.

There are a bunch of people in Washington, all teed up at the globalists’ for a hand out.

You have enough already. That is why you won. You were NOT for sale.

Don’t waver on us, on this issue.

This is IMPORTANT.

Now I suppose he does not ever read FR. But still, it helps to make that point, when one really believes in it.

Build the wall, Trump.

Don’t hesitate, or break stride, or in any way back down to anyone on this very important issue.

Build it. Now.

He can downsize some bureaucracy that democrats and Paul Ryan love, and any increases to budgets can be confiscated, to pay for the wall. If the Democraps squeal, shutdown whole departments. Obama was famous for moving money around (e.g. creating an office on climate change in the national weather service).

I do not believe Trump has given up his border wall money yet:

Trump Tweets: Democrats Help MS-13, Heroin Smugglers by Opposing Border Wall

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3547146/posts

******************************************************

Drug smugglers are being helped by the Democratic leaders in Congress who are trying to block funding for a border wall, says President Donald Trump.

He is using Twitter to hit the Democrats as enablers for the criminal gangs that are smuggling deadly drugs into American cities and towns around the nation, and which are sending murderous MS-13 gang members into Americans’ neighborhoods.

The strategy makes sense because it is true, and because many of the Americans who will vote in 2018 are increasingly concerned about the rising death toll from Mexican-supplied heroin and other drugs. In July 2016, Breitbart News reported:

Voters want safer communities as they see crime rates rising. The Opinion Research Corporation found that 58 percent of voters think politicians aren’t doing enough to keep drug traffickers off the streets, but only 30 percent thought we lock up drug traffickers for too long, a 2-to-1 margin.

Remarkably, female respondents expressed much more support for stronger enforcement than men, with 62 percent of women (mothers, daughters, wives) saying not enough is done to keep traffickers far from their families — indicating a law and order agenda is an issue that can win over significant numbers of women voters.

In response, Democrats are saying Trump should get the Mexican government to pay for the wall up-front.

The Canadian government owns the vast majority of Canadian timber. They (the Canadian gov) in turn sell it to the Canadian mills at virtually zero cost. The mills then "dump" low cost lumber on the American market; it's been going on since at least the early 1990's. The American timber mills, especially the smaller mills, could not complete with the Canadian gov subsidized lower priced timber. Throw in the Clinton regime fiction of "pity the poor Spotted Owl" during the same time and you have the collapse of the American timber industry.

RummyChick...you seem like an argumentative person, your choice, I'm not interested in arguing. My husband has owned a timber products related manufacturing company for over 30 years. We've watched this issue closely. Argue all you want, I won't respond.

I don’t have a problem with imposing the tariff.

Btw, I have family members that make their money off the industry..but more in a second hand kind of way...and it trickles down to me.

I am asking why he isn’t doing it with any the China trade violations.

But make no mistake, Trump was fully on board with Ryancare and must accept equal credit or blame for the humiliation.

There yo go again. I knew it wouldn't take you long to get back to raising this old canard, which is factually refuted by President Trump's own words, both during the campaign and since.

You just can't help yourself...
