The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.
From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked.
It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
It gave me a chance to take off the row covers, and let the lettuce get a good dose of sunshine and rain. I picked some endive to add to my salad to eat tonight along with a few spinach leaves.
Got a little patio cleanup done. Have been doing a little reading on food storage. Looked at a quick recipe of Pembican- 6 Lbs of beef, container of blue berries,(dehydrate these and grind up)add beef tallow made from the chunks of fat.
Old time pioneer/native indian food that supposedly lasts for more than a year.
Hope all is going well for you. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
Here.
It was 71 today! I took Penny-The-Prancing-Pitbull to the dog park for the very first time and she was WONDERFUL.
She played with all, regardless of race, color, or breed.
(My fifth rescue, and just AWESOME)
We have bananas coming in. I really wonder how commercial banana growers survive as the plants fruit so seldom
The latest crop of mangoes was filled with worms. They’ve never had those before and I am not sure there is much I can do about it.
We also have watermelons and the ever present papayas.
Something, probably beetle grubs killed my cannas
Howdy.
Nice. We always adopt a rescue pet too.
We don’t have the weather to grow most of those fruits. While the climate is ok for watermelon, can’t grow those either. Some soil borne disease is what I’m thinking.
My wife's rose garden is sleeping now, but it will soon awaken to its full beauty again, the hummingbirds will return, and Heaven will reappear in my backyard one more time.
Very pretty. Thanks for the Pic.
Good for you. When I look at shelter dogs I just choke up.So much in need. Both of our dogs now are rescues. We may take on a third this year,we take the large breeds that so many people won’t touch.
My Lenten Roses (Hellebores) are starting to open and the daffodils are sprouting! This is at least 3-4 weeks earlier than usual.
To grow watermelons I take a 1 cubit foot bag of mixed manure and a 1 cubit foot of cheap topsoil.from the garden store and mix them and then dump the mixture on top of the ground. I don’t even mix it in the soil. I then lay out cardboard about ten or twelve feet around the pile of soil to prevent weeds.
Doing this means I don’t really till down. In places I only have 1/2 an inch soil before I hit coral limestone.
It may be a soil issue but it may also be snails, slugs and beetles eating the shoots.
I’ve still got a lot of leaves in my yard I didn’t get cleaned-up last fall.
Would it make sense to run the lawnmower over them come Springtime and mulch/mix-in to the garden before it plant it?
I’m guessing I should probably add some extra nitrogen fertilizer if I do it.
I have only had Penny since November, but we are already Best Friends For Life.
I would very much appreciate being added to the ping list for this nice thread series.
Thank you very much,
BT
Please add me to your ping list. Thanks.

I’m trying to figure out why my morning glory and California poppies never came up; seeded them two or three years ago. I soaked the MG seeds overnight as specified but they never came up. The CA poppies were wild seeds and should have propagated regardless.
