A large rift is widening across an increasingly fragile Antarctic ice shelf, scientists found. The crack is spreading across the Larsen C Ice Shelf at an increased rate, threatening to carve out an iceberg the size of Delaware while destabilizing a larger area of ice roughly the size of Scotland.
When this iceberg calving event happens — no one knows exactly when it will occur, except that it's getting closer — it will be the largest calving event in Antarctica since 2000, the third-biggest ever recorded and the largest from this particular ice shelf, scientists say.
About 10 to 12 percent of the Larsen C Ice Shelf is expected to break off during such an event, leaving the larger ice shelf even more vulnerable to melting from increasing air and ocean temperatures.
The iceberg and ice shelf melting would not, however, increase sea levels, since the ice is already resting in the ocean, like an ice cube in a glass.

The artic water harvesters are going to have a lot of business. IIRC, the Japanese towed one big chunk back to Japan to hack off cubes and to make $$$$$$$ blue ice water.
Of course they forget (sic) to mention that Antarctic sea ice has been expanding overall for 37+ years and is at very high levels. There has to be a lot more calving when the sea ice extent and volume keep growing and growing.

So, a larger event happened in 2000 and nobody remembers it except for maybe a few scientists and statisticians, but we’re supposed to be concerned about this one? No thanks.
And since it’s already floating and won’t cause any rise in sea level, the only people that need to be concerned are people on boats in the area. I can’t imagine that’s a significant number.

It’s seems self evident that the ice won’t grow all the way to the equator. It has to calve at some point. How difficult is that to understand?
I was on a cruise ship in Alaska when a huge chunk of glassier calved off only about 1000 meters away.
It did rock the ship, but only a little.
IOW, this isn’t even a threat to close by ships...
