The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
FANTASTIC!
We live in a subdivision that is just outside the city limits of a small rural town of less than 3000 people. We have an acre, and the lots behind us have not been developed.
We have our own well, and septic system. We hope to someday buy those lots behind us. They do have city utilities available, but we would likely just use them for growing food and maybe a garden shed with maybe an attached bathroom, or at least a faucet for another source of water.
When the kids were small, they called the backyard, and the lots behind us, the Forest. Many adventures and games kept them busy then.
That one came through. Nice picture. Thanks.
Praise be - You have been blessed with a good harvest. Thanks for sharing the pictures.
A neighbor put up an electric wire around his tomato plants one year, because of raccoons. I guess his pup thought it was a fire hydrant. LOL
When I checked my gardening pots this morning, discovered that the one holding the tomatoes had been knocked over by the wind; one branch was torn off. The tomatoes have outgrown their current pot so it gets waters twice a day. I’ll be looking around for a bigger one as soon as I can.
freepersup and JaneLong have taught me how to post pictures. I took the flower pictures and sent them to my e-mail. Copied them from e-mail and apparently that doesn't work, only I can view them. Strange.
Then I remembered I've copied pictures from Face Book I had posted and put on freerepublic. So I sent the pics to Face Book and dragged them to our post. Crazy.
The pictures of all the beautiful vegs. are fantastic. I admire all of the ones here sharing information and posting their rewards.
Not to worry. You are outdoing me. I stumbled around and posted some pics once with mega help. Have not been able to post since, and while it’s on my list of things, it ain’t at the top.
So you are already way ahead of me. LOL
There it is...
Can you grow peppers from store-bought green, yellow, orange, red?
I have planted a starter with some organic from Sprout’s grocery store and they look like they’ve taken off already.
But I’m not sure about the other store-bought. I have some seeds refrigerated and I’m not sure that’s good either.
My sweet pepper plant is going good but no veggies on it yet.
I bought some Anaheim Peppers tonight - was thinking I might try planting the seeds.
Bet you can answer the question I just posted!! Nice!
It is a bit of a chore to post photos on FR. I have never tried coping from a Face Book post. I drag my photos to a Flikr account and then size and copy the HTML and paste to FR. (Like I said it’s not easy)
I put in a couple peach trees several years ago. Picked the proper varieties for my area (supposedly) and cross pollination. Pruned them to create an open bowl shape so the sun can get to everything. Even spent about a year with a come-along to straighten up the big one when it decided to lean.
Never had a blossom, and last fall almost all of the branches on both died off and the only growth I have this year is vertical and right up the center.
At least I can use the wood in my smoker.
BTW, when I was looking at peach trees the other day in the store, the tags mentioned you could leave them in the pot.
Probably not. They’re likely hybrids from a factory farm and won’t regrow true to the parent.
Sometimes a nice store bough green pepper could be a couple of bucks—in season less than a dollar each but...
A packet of good seeds is only $2 or $3 dollars and can give you dozens and dozens of peppers.
Your starter sounds like it will do so for you!
Oh... Peppers don’t need as much water as tomatoes.
Hi greeneyes and everyone!
Sneaking in the back of the class, here.
As most of you know, we were under the weather a bit this past spring, so opted for another year without a lot of hands-on gardening.
Today was just gorgeous, and although hot, it wasn’t unbearable. We felt up to doing a little bit to scratch the garden itch.
This spring we had some volunteer tame plantains growing. We also have a boatload of them wild in the yard. The seeds on the volunteer were ready to harvest, so I did. The seeds on the wild ones are not ready yet.
I cleaned up an area where I had stacked a bunch of empty pots, ready for new inhabitants. I had been wanting to get some compost sacks for some time, so we got the truck out and went to get some. We went to the box garden store and found some.
While there, we saw some lovely Greek oregano, German thyme, and Bee Balm.
I had had a good stand of oregano and thyme, but this year, for some reason they did not come back. I was delighted to be able to grab these to quickly replace those. I had not ever had Bee Balm and so will enjoy watching it attract the butterflies and humming birds.
We decided even though it’s late, we would enjoy a nice splash of color for the next few months, so we obtained some petunias and echinacea. The stand of echinacea which up until last year was really happy just have been disappointing this year. They are really scraggy and there are some deformed leaves and sometimes deformed flower heads. I am inclined to think a virus may have gotten to them. I plan to place the new ones in a different area of the yard.
The strawberries are still happy. They had over weathered last winter. A friend of mine gave me a replacement cutting of hensnchicks and an aloe vera plant. The Christmas cactus is also hanging in there.
So there you have it. We’re just plugging away here on the Oklahoma Plain! I hope all is well with all of you!
Thanks. Yeah, I think the organic will go (Sprout’s are poppin’ it seems) but so far haven’t seen anything from any other store-bought.
Tonight, I dropped a few orange bell pepper - it’s a Walmart - if it goes, I’ll be surprised. Otherwise, it will become base soil for the upcoming transplant.
I just dropped at least 40 seeds from a tomato. Good gosh, the first 40 or so took off like a rocket. They did more in 2.5 weeks than another (lousy soil) has done in 6-8 weeks. That’s where the carrots are and they are tiny, tiny. I’ll be lucky if I can cut them out for transplant.
Got a starter set from Lowe’s with 16 pods. Put in multi-color peppers. Looked like only 8 would come in. Then after a few weeks 4 of the remaining 8 started growing. Then about 3 weeks and 2 of the last 4. Now, the last 2 started growing (the last one got the organic pepper - at least 11 growing - I’ll have to separate them).
I’ll post a pic of that kit if I can find it. Good for rookies like me. Gotta have patience, though.
I tend to forget to read the height the plant gets at maturity. I bought a Crepe Myrtle (bush) several years ago. I planted it along side my other shrubs close to my front door. Today in order to see the beautiful blooms one has to look up to the roof of my house to see them. In fact most of the blooming area is atleast 6 to 10 feet past my gutters.
Sounds lovely! :)
We had the last of the broccoli, steamed, for dinner. Only ONE worm - but no one but me knows about THAT, LOL!
New potatoes with butter and fresh parsley from the garden.
A pork loin, but it was no one we personally knew (for a change), LOL!
More zukes and cukes than I know what to do with - so I have to get cracking on THAT this upcoming week. Way too much kale, too. Yeesh!
Beans are just starting to bear, so another week for them, and I pruned the tomato plants (from the bottom to get rid of blighted leaves) and sprayed them all with copper (organic) to slow down the early blight that always happens.
Rain late tonight and on and off tomorrow - which we need.
I’m glad you could still find some bedding plants - the nurseries around here will have their fall Mums out in another 2 weeks!
Wish I could say I miss my job at Jung’s, but I don’t. I miss my friends, but looking back, I don’t know how I survived TEN YEARS of those InSaNe CrAzY Spring Seasons! :)
