Brilliant Fireball Seen Over The Northeast Coast

In the early hours this morning, people that were awake and looking up at the sky in the northeastern United States and far eastern Canada were treated to a magnificent display as a meteorite burned up in the atmosphere, brightening the entire sky for a second as it went.

The American Meteor Society, which reported the event and compiled images and videos taken by night owls and people lucky enough to have dash cams or web cams pointing in the right direction at the right time.

That dash cam clip is almost a dupe of an experience I had in New Castle Pa in 1993 or 4, except the meteor I saw was green and about half as flashy bright .... but a bright, fast mover none the less

Fortunately, the paper reported it the next day because they DO happen in an instant and you're left with ... "What was THAT ?"

Saw one just like the one in gif above fly over my house back in the pre-internet era around 1989 or so, though it moved much slower than the one shown above. Heard a roaring sound as it went overhead. Read in the paper a few days later that crashed into the Pacific Ocean, though I live far from there.

My wife and I saw that one also. We were travelling east bound on the PA Turnpike. Green, fast moving, long tail, moving from South to North. Seemed like it was just above the treetops, but we had no depth perception. I read it came down in NY and they described it as a bromide comet. I’ll never forget it.
