I live by myself and had been away from home for 12 hours. I often leave my home computer turned on even when I am gone. Last night, I noticed my computer screen was on and my computer was downloading Windows 10. I tried to stop it and, when I couldn't, I simply shut the computer off.
After turning it back on, it said "restoring to your previous version" and I'm now back to Windows 7. I noticed that somehow my update settings had all been changed to allow Microsoft maximum access and Windows 10 upgrade was now categorized as "important" rather than "recommended".
I caught the upgrade when it was at 12% so it had not reached the point of uninstalling so I suspect I have just a partial version on my hard drive that can't do anything.
Needless to say, I was furious so I contacted Microsoft support and gave "Andrew Z" a piece of my mind. It's one thing to ask me to upgrade. It's a whole 'nother thing to force the upgrade behind my back.
I turned off all Windows updates (not recommended) and told them I will switch when *I* think it's best, not when they do.
Same thing happened to us overnight.
Suspicious as hell.
"Even beyond what we know about the spyware built into Windows 10, why is it that they are so adamant about everyone upgrading to Windows 10, 'Free', when they usually charge about $180.00 (or more for the 'pro' version) for a new operating System? They surely aren't doing it out of generosity."
"SOMEONE has to be paying them to do this."
"Is it the Feds? Is it (other) evil corporations who want to have all of our data so then can specifically target market us? Soros , The Bilderbergers / NWO types The Lizard People? The Crab People from South Park?"
Maybe my tin hat is wrapped too tight, but seems to me that something inimical is going on
It’s the developers. MSDN licenses cost thousands of dollars year, users have never been the source of MS money, it’s owning the platform everybody else has to use to sell THEIR stuff to those users that makes them money.
My father-in-law’s computer crashed when he updated to Windows 10.
I’m about to buy an I-MAC so I can rid of this filthy piece of spyware trash.
Is that something that evolved from VAX VMS?
I upgraded for you. You seemed hesitant. I'm still here inside your PC.
The attempt to get everyone to a single version is not a bad thing.... Apple saves millions upon millions now that they give away the OS on their PC’s.... When they get a tech support call for a version that’s been replaced and it turns out its a legitimate issue or known bug in that version, they simply tell the user upgrade to the latest OS... done.
MS is trying to get there, but the problem is 8 was such a fustercluck that no one who had to live through that is going to want to leave 7 if they can help it... regardless of all the “spying” allegation stuff about 10.
METRO was a fine interface for a tablet, its abjectly stupid on a PC.... I don’t want METRO anywhere near my desktop. Windows 10 may not be as bad as windows 8, but its still got the stupid tile/touch/metro zombie on it... I want none of it.... I won’t upgrade my windows 7 PC.... and because MS keeps trying to force Metro on me, my next laptop will simply be a mac.
I am sure eventually I will run into a situation where I may do some dedicated development for Windows in the future, and if I do then and only then will I buy another windows PC.
Thanks to raybbr for the ping!!
Buy an I-Mac and never look back!
Congratulations, I have 6 boat anchors if someone needs one.
One has a leather case(ME)
That bad?

WOW! I didn’t know Gibson Research was still around. I used SpinRite back in the early 90s! Cool.
I don't use the metro tile things and there is virtually no difference in daily use than with win 7. My desktop looks and acts like it did in 7.
There were quite a few driver updates that Toshiba put out prior to the 8.1 but the 10 was seamless.
IE did not work on 8.1 and does not work on 10 (at least on this laptop). The only software that I had to update was my norton from comcast.
I have 2 laptops and 1 netbook all running win 10 and no problems. I did turn off the spyware.
I also think the win 10 is faster.
My message may have gone out wrong, sorry.
Since owning computers in 95 , I have bought many, but only one I-Mac and more than happy with it. My son who has built 6 of his own, helped me with the decision on a 27” I-Mac.
The Boat anchors are not APPLE. You will be very happy with yours.
Check my tag(age).
I read your post wrong. I thought your 6 boat anchors were alluding to the I-Mac’s. Very glad to hear you love your I-Mac.
I’m very excited to be dumping Microsoft.
I wish my girlfriends 8.1 laptop would upgrade on it’s own.
On the ipad have not powered on computer yet. It tried to do it late last night, and I stopped it. Afraid to turn it on now to see if happened to me. Will be this evening late before I do, will check back in then. I hope it did not do it, grand kids will have to help me if it did, very computer illiterate here.
Sweetest little utility I’ve ever used. THANKS!
