Bond between man and dog is closer than you thought — how canines hearts are in sync with ours

THE bond between man and dog is so close their hearts actually beat in sync when they are together an astounding new study shows.

The heart rates of owners and their dogs become lower when they are in close proximity an experiment that saw heart monitors strapped to dogs and their owners found.

The discovery shows dogs have a fundamental role to play in lowering stress says sports scientist Dr Craig Duncan.

And canine scientist Mia Cobb says owning a dog can do more than just lower your heart rate.

They even recover more quickly from a heart attack, she says.

Dr Duncan and canine scientist and PHD student Mia Cobb separated three dogs from their owners and placed heat monitors on both the humans and the dogs and monitored what happened when they were reunited.

The owner sat on a lounge and when the dog entered the room and jumped on the couch to greet their owner the heart rates of both the dogs and the humans lowered.

“I wasn’t expecting how much they were synched up and it surprised and impressed me,” says Ms Cobb.

While dogs and humans biologically exhibit different heart rates the study showed their heart rates dipped and became elevated at the same rate while they were together.

The heart rate of the humans dropped by around 20 points and the dogs by around 40 points when the were united.

The Monash University PHD student says when humans pat a dog it releases oxytocin, a chemical that relieves stress.

I see the videos of the military men and women coming back home and their dogs going crazy in happiness and all I can think is “This is wonderful but I get almost the same response when I get home from the supermarket”.

Happy dogs are happy dogs and mine is as happy as it gets. Literally tries to claw through the door, jumping up and down whenever I get home (she’s part springer spainel :) )

Feed a dog for seven days and he remembers you for seven years.

Amazing. The more we know about this incredible bond, the more there is to learn.

I believe this to be a fact. My little Yorkie passed away in December and I haven’t been the same since. I miss her so much.

I and my wife have exactly the same reaction when we get home. My dog is a shelter dog, half German Sheppard and half golden Labrador. She is now 12 years old. When we went up to the local Humane Society facility, my wife was asked to walk the dog. This was to see if everything was going to be all right. The dog refused to return to the shelter.

She had been rejected by two previous would be adoptive owners. My daughters told my wife - you cannot take that dog- it's crazy. She did, of course. Yes, incredible how she barges right out to the front steps- we have to force our way in (laughs). Demands to be taken out to the park, keeps me in shape.

That’s because dogs have a profound sense of greeting. My neighbors little dog loves me so. “You better run girl” is my customary greeting. Dad’s little dog used to get so choked up when I came by to a point she couldn’t swallow. He used to say your brothers here Katie. Greet your dogs people, it is so emotional for them, much more so than our own greetings.

Take heart. Dad’s little Yorkie Katie visibly grieved at his death. She would often look up when I was there, as if some unseen presence was above us. A smart little dog, always suckered me into taking her outside, lol.
