The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you won't be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
My potatoes, are growing nicely. Both the volunteers from last year and the Yukon Gold planted this year. Lettuce, spinach, and carrots have sprouted. Chives have tiny bulbs.
Fruit trees have survived the frosts with some blooms intact. Some of the trees have 5 years growth, so we are hoping for some fruit this year.
Picked up some magazines at Walmart. First up to read is Mother Earth article-self reliance on 1 acre. Will have to go to Springfield area this weekend. Does anyone know anybody from that area who would like to earn some money by mowing a yard?
Will also be working in some compost and getting another bed ready to plant and adding some soil and straw to the potato bed as some of the volunteers are a bit close to the surface.
Prayers up for all. Hope you have a great weekend. God Bless.
Pinging the list.
FIRST!!!
Garlic is growing more every day. Lettuce, beets, carrots, peas, kale, bok choy, chard, and onions in and up. We are eating spinach, parsley, and chives. Green is good. I’m so happy things are green again!
LOL. That you are!
Me too. Jealous that I didn’t get stuff out sooner, so that I could be munching on home grown too.
I’ve got plenty of little white flowers on my strawberry plants here in PA. I hope to be enjoying some tasty strawberries in a little more than a month.
Tomatoes (Sun Gold cherry, Cherokee Purple, Russian Black Krim, Mortgage Lifter, Husky Red Cherry) just bustin after all this rain, I’ve snacked on 7-8 SunGold: brilliant orange, green seeds, sweet as sugar wuth an acidic tickle.
Peas: should harvest 1lb in a couple days. Little Marvel.
Lettuce, spinach, radishes already harvesting.
Exotic and heirloom squashes opening male flowers.
Peppers fruiting and some ready to eat.
Thornless Arapahoe blackberries taking their time but thornful ones growing berries. Snatching single strawberries almost everyday until flush crop throws. Fig trees 2yos coming down with rust.. I trim it off.
Sugar cube personal cantaloupes throwing buds and tendrils.
Muncher cukes throwing secondary leaves. Soybeans already have soybeans. Collection of 20 different flowering vines goin nuts.
Have to re-fertilize everything after the nonstop rains the last week.
That’s nice. Hubby let the strawberries go last year, just didn’t get around to cutting back or covering with straw. So we had to replant this spring. Will be picking off the flowers so no berries this year.
That’s a lot of stuff. You are far ahead of us.
For those who are looking for next week's weather outlook,or a 14 day outlook ,
I will try to post Joe Bastardi's Saturday summary tomorrow .
Sometimes he posts anywhere from 11:00AM to 5:00 PM. on a Saturday , depending on his weekend activities, or, Penn State athletic activities.
I follow him, as among weathermen and climatologists, I find him more accurate and he explains weather variables and expectations.
Today, I planted azaleas, rhododendrons, pansies, and Elysium in my wee little plot.
I also installed some stepping stones and a little concrete Oriental lantern.
My herbs are doing great on my deck, along with three kinds of lettuce and onions.
I am becoming a FARMER! LOL!
Garden thread time, YAY!
So far this/last week, I have planted all my purple potatoes. And all my finger potatoes. I got over to the neighbors with a bunch more fingers and purples (the fingers are actually good, healthy starts) Got them planted.
Today I got a tomato plant and a couple lemon cukes, also a rhubarb root from the nursery, I have to figure out where to plant the rhubarb.
Soon, Monday I think, Bellarmine prep school has the beginning of their plant sale. This is one of the hugest plant sales in the NW!
I’m excited, tomorrow the Morgan/Decatur Farmers market opens, it will be a 4AM wake up for me. I will have summer squash, new potatoes, baby swiss chard, lettuce, radishes and lots of potted plants for sale.
In centex we can direct-seed from nov-feb cool crops and transplant march 1. Work like crazy till May 15 when it gets into the 95o then we go inside and don’t go back outside until Oct, except to harvest and water. Fist hard freeze isn’t until mid or late Nov., so we can take our time gardening. Growing bitter and water melon, winter squashes, eggplant, big melons, pumpkins too.
You mean transplants! for a sec I thought you meant produce.
OH YEH! BASTARDI ROCKS!!!!!!
Me too. LOL
The soil here is really rocky, but as i sift them out, I use them to build stone walls around my plots.
Yes...it’s THAT rocky. They even named the town ROCKLAND. I kid you not.
No wonder the Pilgrims starved.
I have all my seeds. Never got around to starting tomatoes. Might try to work that in next week. Got to add compost to the volunteer potatoes, companion plant green beans with them, and put down some straw to help keep the moisture in the sq. foot bed of Mel’s mix.
