Sears Holdings Corp. will close another 78 stores 68 Kmart units, and 10 Sears stores as it looks to restore profitability.
That accounts for about 5 percent of its store base, which is nearly 1,700 stores.
The ailing company, based in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, had said in February that it would accelerate the closing of unprofitable stores following a challenging holiday season. The move announced Thursday is expected to generate a meaningful level of cash from the liquidation of store inventories and from the sale or sublease of some of the related real estate, it said Thursday.
All 10 Sears stores and nearly all the Kmart stores will close in late July. Two Kmart stores will close in mid-September.

It’s Recovery Summer time again!
Man, it’s been a long, slow grind into oblivion for that company.
They closed the K-Mart in my town. Then redid the plaza and put in a Ross & Aldi. The place is rocking now. K-Mart is zombie company. Time to put it to sleep, IMO.
Is there any info on which stores will close?
No joke. I went to Sears the other day to get a filter for my shop vac. I found a couple of other items on sale and on clearance that I also needed. I go to check out, have to wait for someone, then the clearance item doesn’t ring up and the clerk asks me how much it was so I tell her. Then the sale item doesn’t ring up right and so I correct her, take her to where it is so she can see the price. She complains to me (a customer!) about how they are always changing the prices and it doesn’t match the ads and the computers are never right. I worked retail when I was young so I blew it off to her as ‘pitfalls of working retail’ but I would NEVER ever badmouth the company to a customer. So ten she needs an over ride it took 3 calls to a supervisor and almost 5 minutes for the supervisor to show up. If it haden’t been such a good price I would have left.
And don’t get me started on Kmarts - I gave up on them years ago.

Still though, hate seeing all these businesses going out.
Hmm. The East Stroudsburg (PA) K-Mart isn’t on that list. The Mount Pocono location closed last summer.
Pro shopping tip: Once I saw a price for a dozen eggs at walmart that defied belief (30 cents a doz). I took a pix with my smartphone and when the eggs rung up higher, I showed the clerk and got the displayed price.
102 of which are the smaller Walmart Express types.
Sears is Americana to me.I’d much rather see Starbucks fold.
I used to buy all my work hand tools there.
Sure Snap on and stuff was better if you had chromed nuts (like for my cars and bikes, and I would use for that), but for work, they were pretty decent priced, and you could bend a wrench (which we often do using extensions) and sears used to replace them.
Now, they bend so easy, they are just junk, not worth it, and they don’t fit right so they round bolts out.
MAC tools is where I spend my money now if I need too, but I still have hundreds if not thousands of crafstman hand tools laying around in various boxes.
That’s a lot of people who were just barely hanging on, losing their jobs. Sears in many ways brought this on themselves, they were struggling even before online shopping started to hit retail hard. But, I hate to see it, still.
You’re not the only one.
That is a slightly different list and there may be a few more. Our Kmart isn’t on that list but I have been told its closing and that Hobby Lobby is already set to take over the property (anchor store in a very small mall)
Get rid of the stench of tires from the clothes area for starters!
I cant STAND the smell of a sears store, but LOVE many of their non clothing products.
I am saddened by their decline too. More than any other company they invented modern retail. With a catalogue and mail order a person in a small town on the grear plains could buy the same things a person in New York could buy.
And this is the lowest unemployment since 1973.
Yeah, right.
We lived in rural Florida.
I particularly remember Mother ordering clothes etc. before school started. This was around 1951. When the package came we all could not wait to open it and see what everyone got.
