The New York Times is sitting on an audio recording that some of its staff believes could deal a serious blow to Donald Trump who, in an off-the-record meeting with the newspaper, called into question whether he would stand by his own immigration views.
Trump visited the paper’s Manhattan headquarters on Tuesday, Jan. 5, part of a round of editorial board meetings that — as is traditional — the Democratic candidates for president and some of the Republicans attended. The meetings, conducted partly on the record and partly off the record in a 13th floor conference room, give candidates a chance to make their pitch for the paper’s endorsement.
After a dispute over Trump’s suggestion of tariffs on Chinese goods, the Times released a portion of the recording. But that was from the on-the-record part of the session.
n Saturday, columnist Gail Collins, one of the attendees at the meeting (which also included editor-in-chief Dean Baquet), floated a bit of speculation in her column:
The most optimistic analysis of Trump as a presidential candidate is that he just doesn’t believe in positions, except the ones you adopt for strategic purposes when you’re making a deal. So you obviously can’t explain how you’re going to deport 11 million undocumented immigrants, because it’s going to be the first bid in some future monster negotiation session.
Sources familiar with the recording and transcript — which have reached near-mythical status at the Times — tell me that the second sentence is a bit more than speculation. It reflects, instead, something Trump said about the flexibility of his hard-line anti-immigration stance.
So what exactly did Trump say about immigration, about deportations, about the wall? Did he abandon a core promise of his campaign in a private conversation with liberal power brokers in New York?

Exactly! WHAT did Cruz, Rubio say ‘off the record’...and why did Cruz know about this before anyone else...he’s been talking about it all day.
Whoever you support for president, it should BOTHER you how Trump is singled out for stupid questions and rumors by this party, media and YOUR candidates.

Everyone admits to the existence of the tape.
The NYSlimes are claiming it is off the record and will only release it if Trump says it is OK.
Cruz already gave a speech about it—came up on my facebook newsfeed.
But the bottomline was Donald can easily make this go away...just ask the Times to release the story. Supposedly it was off the record so they won’t release it unless Trump okays it. Trump should okay it and show he has nothing to hide. If he doesn’t ok it then he’s lying.
Sleazy Cruz is calling on Trump to release the tape. LoL.
Not only do they not care, but, a few posts down someone’s doing contortions that could result in permanent injury. Something about how this just shows how the Donald can pivot and shift to the situation.
Ridiculous. They want to give Cruz/Rubio a colonoscopy and the media’s just waiting to give the Trumpkins an enema come the general.

Or maybe he’ll just say he had a defective earpiece during the NY Times interview.
Or maybe the roar of traffic outside the Times Building was so loud that he couldn’t understand the question clearly.

How so? All Trump has to do is say release it now! And then he exposes Cruz as a liar or Trump is the liar. This is easy.
This would definitely be the final nail in Cruz’s coffin if it turns out Trump never said this.

These rumors are just BS. We can’t do anything about, or get anyone to cover REAL Corruption by Cruz and the RNC/NRSC! And it will only get worse until someone like Trump stops it.

Trump is very clear: “We need 1,000 miles of wall”. I agree we’re rolling the dice on Trump. But as Sen. Sessions have said: career politicians have said for 30 years they would fix it. They haven’t. No reason to believe the latest crop will either.

Yes, I understand. I’d be fine if they release it, it they release everything Cruz/Rubio said off the record. But they won’t even release their full tax returns after promising LAST WEEK to do so. They released a summary, LATE, which shows ZIP.
This is why it’s tough to talk on Forums. People assume too much.
There are two types of Trump supporters (mostly).
Ones that believe everything he’s saying and think he’s a true conservative. And others that just want to break the GOPe by taking away their party.
Those in the first group I think will have a rude awakening and they’ll be crying later. Those in the 2nd group don’t care as long as the GOPe loses—which I understand.
Two days ago Cruz released nine years of tax returns. You probably know that, but that doesn’t stop you.
No, Cruz released tax summaries. And filed for an extension for last year to hide it. Principled conservatism? Hardly.
Trump has pretty much told us how he's going to turn his back on everything Conservative, much of it sneaking out already - primarily due to his becoming more confident in his prospects. He's revealed dictatorial positions on the 1st Amendment and the legal process, promised he'll work with Democrats to get stuff done, said Bush is responsible for 9/11, and has again and again praised Planned Parenthood. They're a “great organization that does a lot of wonderful things,” but he's going to go after them (rolling eyes).
He mocks our Faith by telling us what a great Christian he is, ridicules our intelligence by claiming that he reads the Bible more than anyone.
But they don't care. He could come out tomorrow and claim he's Jesus Christ, and they wouldn't care.
All they care about is “F*ck You.”
Don't think I've ever seen a smear campaign on this scale before....and it is a smear campaign (as you pointed out) given the timing.
Don't ever underestimate the power of the establishment and look for more attacks, likely far worse then this.
WHY is any of this even being spoken about if it is OFF THE RECORD!????
