As Tim Hortons attempts to expand in the US, it is facing the harsh reality that Americans might not be as committed to the coffee chain as cultish Canadian customers.
On Wednesday and Thursday, more than 20 Tim Hortons locations abruptly closed in Maine, New York City, and upstate New York.
Local news stations reported that employees didn't receive much advance notice, with a one employee telling Syracuse.com that the company showed âno respectâ for employees, with the surprise layoffs on the cusp of the holiday season.
Employees were further infuriated because they reported that many of the closed locations performed well and met sales targets. Despite this, they say that the company decided to close all locations in the area.
Customers were also displeased by the sudden closures. One customer in Lewiston, Maine told the Sun Journal that the location closed up shop so abruptly that employees turned off the lights as he was still finishing his cup of green tea.

Possibly the Burger King merger? They’re run as separate companies, but there might be a connection.
Maybe it was just there but the donuts tasted like they forgot the salt.
Krispy Kreme's are better.
And Marge's blows all the chains out of the water.
There is one in Wintersville, Ohio, just west of Steubenville. I have a Canuck friend that I visit there every few years, and he is very glad that it is so close to him.
Several years ago I found out that Tim Horton was a cousin of mine. Wish I’d known that when he was still alive, and playing in the NHL.
These things still work.
“Krispy Kreme opened in Fargo a few years ago, to enormous hoopla, and didnât last a year. Everyone loves donutsâbut Americans are definitely limiting their intake.”
A dollar a piece or $8/doz has something to do with that.
I tried a box of Tim Horton's decaf K-cups and was not impressed either. It wasn't horrible, just not memorable. I like my coffee really, really dark and strong.
Good more for us
Tim Horton’s is to Buffalo as Starbucks is to San Francisco.
Shame he couldn’t keep that Pantera straight on the QEW
Canada Ping!
Tim’s donuts were far better when they were made in-store, but about 20 years ago they started par-baking them centrally, freezing them, then re-heating them in the stores. Just awful now.
Poutine.
Sounds dirty.
Mispronounce the word slightly and you’re saying “whore” in French. The first time I heard the name from a Canadian colleague who recommended it as the ultimate Canuck snack I was a little surprised. Then she said it consisted of french fries and cheese curds, slavered in beef gravy. Hmmm, health food, eh?
They literally melt in your mouth, no comparison to the ones you buy in the boxes at the grocery store. We can never pass a KK which has a Hot Now sign turned on.
It's only dirty if you do it right.
Dunkin Donuts did the same thing. I can remember when they used to bake donuts fresh on site around 20 years ago
more eastern Canadian mythology...poutine.....another manufactured Canadian tradition right up there with peace keeping, saying sorry all the time, how much we looooove our...free... healthcare and our addiction to Molson Canadian swamp water.....
