MICHAEL WANG, a young Californian, came second in his class of 1,002 students; his ACT score was 36, the maximum possible; he sang at Barack Obamas inauguration; he got third place in a national piano contest; he was in the top 150 of a national maths competition; he was in several national debating-competition finals. But when it came to his university application he faced a serious disappointment for the first time in his glittering career. He was rejected by six of the seven Ivy League colleges to which he applied.
I saw people less qualified than me get better offers, says Mr Wang. At first I was just angry. Then I decided to turn that anger to productive use. He wrote to the universities concerned. I asked: what more could I have done to get into your college? Was it based on race, or what was it based on? He got vague responsesor none. So he complained to the Department of Education. Nothing came of it. The department said they needed a smoking gun.
In May this year Mr Wang joined a group of 64 Asian-American organisations that made a joint complaint to the Department of Education against Harvard, alleging racial discrimination. That follows a lawsuit filed last year against Harvard and the University of North Carolina by a group of Asian-American students making similar charges. The department rejected the claim in July, but another two complaints have since been filed by Asian-Americans, one against Harvard and one against nine other universities.

He should be thankful he didn’t get accepted.
problem is if Obama had a son he wouldn’t look like you.....
>>ol. He has NO business applying to all seven Ivy League schools, and his HS guidance counselors are at fault for letting him do so, and supporting his applications.<<
What a load. Let us pretend his ISN’T a hopie-changie fool. A kid has exactly ONE allegiance: to himself. He should apply to EVERY college that he thinks he can get into and he wants to attend.
The other schools have been doing this for a long time and the admissions officers know how to weigh for the Wangs of the world.
Compare this with a community which knocks those who study hard as “acting white”...
Which one do you think will succeed?
LOL!
But on the other hand, many young people would have jumped at the chance to perform for a president - not matter what party.
So many funny, cynical responses to this story!
Probably not on the expectations. He most likely applied to all of them because he knows it's a crap shoot for Asians, and he expected to be rejected at most because of their racism. I know several Asian families in which the kids did the same expecting to deal with racist decisions. I don't blame him for doing his best to win at least once in a dishonest game.
At the time, Yale's fee was $150. Do the math...
everything is reduced to a number and then limits/goals set, maybe never written down but everyone knows them.
The gub'mint, more than any other entity is metric driven NOT result driven
But this one applied to all eight Ivy League schools, and was accepted by all.
Hmmm... what is different?
It was Mr Wang’s white privilege that did him in.
Take your talents to a non-Ivy and make that school better. Eventually the Ivies will be known for their 3rd rate, afirmative action products who can’t actually do anything.
Oh, and stop voting ‘Rat. They’re the ones who put you in this position.
You vote for Communism, you get Communism.
the idiot wanted an Obama world, now he’s dealing with the reality of a world created by the likes of Obama.
Schadenfreude!
