Weekly Preppers Thread

Posted on 08/28/2015 6:23:44 PM PDT by Kartographer

Haven't done one for a while and with all that is going on I though it would be a good idea to do a Weekly Prepper Thread, for posting tips, new products, good prep buys etc.....

Underestimation can be fatal.”

Well, I think learning code would be easy for me - it’s really a kind of language, and I’m good at languages.

And, I will learn it, because it intrigues me; but CW isn’t required anymore.

It’s the math that’s getting me down. I’m one of those people who got into college on good SAT scores for things like language, literature; my math scores were rotten ;-)

(Fortunately, I’ve got a brainy husband, and he’s teaching me all those ‘things to the power of’ &c :-)

A large pickle jar right now...probably a half gallon size, maybe bigger (think Costco size). I worry about the metal cap rusting and should find something better. I also printed off the instructions and taped them to the side of the jar.

Thank you! The cooking time question I have is the only thing keeping me from stocking up on beans.

I enjoy your posts very much, Kart. I am learning quite a bit of information that is and will be useful in what I think lies ahead. Thanks so much for all you do.

Excellent idea! I have one I just saved, just cuz...;)

I’ll just check the lid periodically.

I have some of those white lids for mason jars to put on after removing the canning lid. But I’m sure they are not airtight.

I didn’t know they entirely eliminated the code requirement for all license classes. Where have I been? LOL. Maybe I should pull out the Extra Class manual my parents gave me and work on it.

Menu fatigue is a real thing. You should read up on it.

It kills people.

Add me to that bean ping list too, please.

I’m the poster formerly known as yorkiemom. I’ve made the great escape to our personal Gulch (Holler, in our case), so changed names to reflect that. Still have the little live of my life. sitting in my lap as I type ;)

A small pressure cooker takes about 10 min to cook pinto beans, less for smaller beans. You just need enough fuel to get the pressure up, mainly just enough to boil the water.

That’s the only part I liked, and then they eliminated it!

Menu fatigue is why I’m developing spice blends for beans and rice. Using whole spices, molasses, sugar etc - you can have Boston baked beans, chili beans, Cajun beans, red beans and rice, and jambalaya by just adding these freshly ground spices to cooked beans or rice. Whole spices packed right will last a decade, or more.

What’s a ram pump?

Hydraulic Ram Wiki

Ram Pump pt1-Engineer775 Practical Preppers

Old and elegant technology. I live at the top of a ridge with a clean stream at the bottom. For the same reasons, I do not want to haul it up 544 feet (90ft elevation). This is my if all else fails.

I don’t think you’re posting too much, if some people do ask them if they want to be removed from the list.

IF they want to know what you’ve got on a thread let them use the search box.

I may be wrong (I’m new at this) but I think they have ditched code for all classes.

But they appear to change the tests every few years; so you may want to get an up-to-date manual.

We bought a manual at the thrift store, and then found out that it was outdated; so we ordered the newest one from the ARRL.

I learned code so early that I don't remember NOT knowing it.

While I was in the AF the first time, I let my licence lapse. One of my ex-wives wanted her license, so I took her up there.

They talked me into taking the test. Code was the easy part. I had to do real math on the rest of it.

I got my 14 WPM, and stopped at Advanced since they are/did/will phase that out for Extra. I wanted a weird license, so I've got that one until it expires. Won't be long. 2018. I'll worry about it if I live that long. Then I'll get extra.

I first learned some Morse when I was a little kid, and my brother got this amazing Christmas gift: a huge battery-run Aircraft Carrier toy, with planes that you could launch off the deck, and instruction cards for sending coded messages.

All I remembered was SOS - because that was the most important, of course :-)
