Astronomy Picture of the Day -- Comet Dust over Enchanted Rock
NASA ^ | August 14, 2015 | (see photo credit)

Explanation: Dusty debris from periodic Comet Swift-Tuttle was swept up by planet Earth this week. Vaporized by their passage through the dense atmosphere at 59 kilometers per second, the tiny grains produced a stream of Perseid meteors. A bright, colorful Perseid meteor flash was captured during this 20 second exposure. It made its ephemeral appearance after midnight on August 12, in the moonless skies over the broad granite dome of Enchanted Rock State Natural Area, central Texas, USA. Below the Perseid meteor, trees stand in silhouette against scattered lights along the horizon and the faint Milky Way, itself cut by dark clouds of interstellar dust.

Love Enchanted Rock. I’ve been to the top dozens of times.

Great pic!

When I was in 9th grade we went there on a field trip. Can’t imagine 9th graders doing it today. Too much chance of injury or stupidity in the liberal world. Sad because they are missing out on a beautiful site.

I always like to place these in geographic context. Enchanted Rock State Park is just north of Fredericksburg, Texas - central part of Texas. Good place for night sky viewing as indicated on its website as being an "International Dark Sky Park.

Never been to Enchanted Rock; always wanted to go.

It’s in BFE.

Question: could a person ride a mountain bike on it?

Not on it, it’s too steep.

Not sure if bikes are allowed on the surrounding land, haven’t been there in years.

You can see the light pollution from distant cities on both sides of the tree. In another 20 years the artificial light will all but wash out those skies.

Yeah, that will be a shame. Of course, I’ve been hearing about this for forty years at least.

There are pics of the expanding light domes from population centers done years ago with pics comparing them to modern images. The expansion of light domes are frightening.

Cities like LA, Phoenix, Vegas, Dallas etc. are immense and growing. They can now be seen hundreds of miles away, reaching 50 degrees up from the horizon. The closer one gets, the more the skies are completely washed out.

Many regions of America which used to be considered dark sky sites, no longer exist.
