Windows 10 Is Finished And Ready To Be Released To Manufacturers Ahead Of Launch Date

Microsoft has completed work on Windows 10, and the new OS is ready to go, according to reports from The Verge and Neowin. The final release to manufacturing (RTM) build, number 10240, is the version customers will receive on launch day on July 29.
After today, Redmond's developers will be moving towards working on updates. Microsoft's plan is for Windows 10 to be the last version of Windows ever. That means the company will release regular updates, Android style, instead of giant releases once every few years.
The news comes on the same day Office for Windows 10 removes the beta tags, meaning Microsoft's vision for a single Windows everywhere is starting to take shape. The new office suite is an example of a "universal app," one that will run anywhere that Windows 10 is running, be it tablet, desktop, phone or laptop.
Insider Preview users will receive the final build soon, after which they will receive beta versions of the updates Microsoft is now focused on. While it seemed before that Insider customers would get to keep the final build for free, those looking to opt out of future beta releases will have to get a genuine copy through Microsoft.
The news closes the book on Windows 8, a chapter of Microsoft's history the company is likely to want to forget. Time will tell whether Windows 10 becomes the runaway success the company hopes it will be, with the work towards the target of one billion installations starting soon.

How long did PC manufacturers keep supplying XP after Vista had been released? At least two years, right?
And as I recall, Dell would still ship you a machine with XP on it even after the Microsoft "drop dead" date, if you asked for it. They didn't list it as an option on their website, but you could still get it by asking.

Windows 8? How about 8.1 which I was forced to accept one day as there was no way out without throwing my PC away and buying another one. I wish I had 8 back!!

If 10 is finished, then it’s the first time for a Windows product.

Mrs p6’s laptop is registered for the July 29 update and both she and I are insiders. I believe MS has already been pushing out W10 components. That could be causing minor issues...longer boot time, background updating, sudden wireless and hardware compatibility strangeness. All very minor but still irritating.
These component packages once in place MAY be why there can be a massive roll out on the 29th.
Or not.
Windows weekly might have the answers on https://twit.tv/ tonight.

No, one day I sat down here at the computer and BOOM, all of a sudden a screen came up and forced me into 8.1. I tried everything to back out, but no can do.

Well....the update was really more akin to a service pack. The primary reason for it was to appease a large number of people who claimed the OS was garbage because the “start button” was missing...lol
In any case the 8.1 variant had a better interface to access the old style desktop for those who needed it....(and I am one of those who likes the desktop and hates the tiles)

My assumption:
Signing up gets you in the queue for the upgrade. They are not going to be able to upgrade everybody on the 29th.
If you sign up they will give you a notice when you are able to upgrade.

Microsoft is in pure panic mode. They are not waiting until October, and hitting the gas pedal now.
Apple's iOS 9 beta just rolled out last week. It's suppose to be ready in September.
Google and Amazon also have stuff they are rolling out too.
This should get interesting.

yeah...that’s about it....it will take some time to distribute the update..
The best reason I can come up with for getting it is that the new browser is supposed to be a real big improvement. (and you can’t get it without the entire OS upgrade)
