The Washington Post has published a guest article by a California teacher arguing that American high school students shouldnt read Shakespeare because hes a dead, white man.
Dana Dusbiber, who teaches English in Sacramento, says she avoids Hamlet and all the rest because her minority students shouldnt be expected to study a a long-dead, British guy (Dusbiber herself is white). And while Shakespeare is widely regarded as the premier writer of the English language, able to timelessly portray themes central to the human experience, Dusbiber says he only is regarded that way because some white people ordained it and he can easily be replaced.
Why not teach the oral tradition out of Africa, which includes an equally relevant commentary on human behavior? She suggests. Why not teach translations of early writings or oral storytelling from Latin America or Southeast Asia other parts of the world? Many, many of our students come from these languages and traditions perhaps we no longer have the time to study the Western canon that so many of us know and hold dear.
To bolster her case for dumping the Bard, Dusbiber says that minority students, like those who dominate her own classroom, deserve to study their own cultures rather than being exposed to Eurocentrism. But at the same time, she takes the exact opposite position for whites, saying school should be a place for them to explore cultures other than their own.

“The American education system is rampant with woman like her.”
I’ve dated one or two and agree. But then there is Lazamataz . . .
Her eyes don’t look overly crazy.
I found Shakespeare to be hilarious but the jokes and puns go over most people’s heads. People who think his work is stiff and pretentious miss that some of his stuff is as bawdy as any night club act.
I guess whites shouldn’t listen to BB King because he is dead and black.
Gawd, how stupid.
I guess I’m less angry about this kind of bigotry than I am just floored by these liberals’ profound stupidity.
Time was when a teacher like her who refused to teach the basic curriculum would be out of a job in short order!
country, culture, “white male” - all are proxies for her true target - Christianity.
She and her fellow travelers hate Christianity first and foremost.
They are teaching “Trans-History” “Trans-Math” and “Trans-Literature”..
Everything is now open to Subjective Revision.
The very recent spate of TRANS NEWS....may provide enough of a shock to blow thier whole agenda out of the water.
My kids had to read this in high school:

Things Fall Apart stands out from so many other works of its era because it does not sentimentalize Africa. Situated in the village of Umuofia it speaks of brutality and suffering, tradition and community.
Follow the story of Okonkwo, the son of a lazy but amiable man and the father of several children of his own. Overcoming the obstacles set before him in childhood, he becomes a prosperous farmer and winning wrestler and gains the respect of his peers.
I read it, too. It was interesting but not like Shakespeare. Why must it be either/or? Read a wide variety of authors.
She hungers to be a victim... maybe she can run for a local NAACP office... We can all pity here while getting ‘down with the struggle’... or we can gaze at our belly buttons togeter and read tea leaves while wishing for unicorns..
What an effing idiot. This is why our college system sucks.
William Shakespeare - ("A Comedy of Errors" - published 1590)

Pity that she won’t teach Shakespeare. It means that her students’ command of their native tongue will be even more deficient, because they’re missing a basic building block.
I wonder if she realizes that Africa is a continent with hundreds of heterogeneous cultures?
(Never mind, it’s a rhetorical question.)
I would think any English-speaking (or any other) literature student to be deprived if he or she did not make acquaintance with, say, Cervantes or Goethe, Montaigne or Dostoevsky. This is not any great revelation. If Shakespeare isn't on that list the student is just as deprived if not more so. Does this teacher imagine that they don't teach Shakespeare in other languages? Apparently so:
Many, many of our students come from these languages and traditions perhaps we no longer have the time to study the Western canon that so many of us know and hold dear.
We do have the time to prune it to the essentials, which is what teachers are supposed to do. Shakespeare is one of those. If she could make the ghost of a case that any oral tradition of Africa is remotely equivalent, call me.
I wouldn't want her training any dog of mine.
CORRECT!
This witch is selfishly elevating her own inability to read and understand Shakespeare into a Virtue of Diversity.
What a rotten-to-the-core human being.
“Does this teacher imagine that they don’t teach Shakespeare in other languages?”
Even better - someone should find examples of Shakespeare and other classic European writers being taught to black students in schools at all levels throughout Africa and send them to her. Never mind, she would probably just blame it on oppressive colonialism and imperialism (even in African nations which have been independent for decades).
"Trans"? Do you mean "transgender"? Now I might vaguely see how they can have their own history and literature, but their own math? This is truly psychotic!
so she is a racist because she EXCULDES one author because of his skin. (BTW how does she KNOW his skin color? she is assuming.)
She doesn’t teach Shakespeare because she doesn’t know anything.
