Anthropologists Have Mapped All 61 Tattoos On Ötzi The Iceman

By using an innovative non-invasive photographic technique, European researchers have managed to locate and map the extensive set of tattoos on the exquisitely preserved remains of Ötzi the Iceman. Remarkably, they even found a previously unknown tattoo on his ribcage.
Ötzi's frozen remains were discovered by two German tourists in the Ötzal Alps on the border between Austria and Italy in 1991. He lived around 3,300 BCE and represents Europe's oldest natural human mummy. Because he was so well preserved in ice, he has provided anthropologists with a slew of information about Copper Age (or Chalcolithic) humans.
...
It's worth noting that Ötzi's tattoos were not applied by needles, but by making incisions into which charcoal was rubbed.

Not trying to offend but that is how I feel. Are you a closet liberal? They are generally the ones who make judgements based on feeeeeeelings...BTW, your decision to mock based on tats is pretty ignorant. Not to offend, but that's fact, Jack.

re: ... the ones on the lower back had to be applied by someone else. What that means I dont know exactly but I think it might indicate its a known and shared practice of the tribe.
Humans are a tribal species. We, alas, spontaneously form tribes. One might call this the “Lord of the Flies” effect. This helped make us the dominate large mammals on the planet, but came with a lot of destructive baggage.
When we can’t differentiate from the neighboring tribes by natural morphology (e.g. race), we create artificial differentiation, usually body mods, of which tats are one.

I’m an acupuncture fan. I don’t gave tattoos so I can’t compare them, but I can type with honesty that I very rarely feel the needles. I’ve heard tattooing is quite the opposite.

Some one on another web page said the tats are acupuncture points.
To: goodwithagun
Thanx, but (though perhaps I should have explained),
IF accupuncture was practiced back then
AND it was a mobile society
THEN it might be reasonable to mark the places that had been successful in the past for a doctor unfamiliar with his patient
Do the location of those (look like bar codes, eh?) tats indicate ANYthing ... perhaps ?
