An ancient art becomes mainstream: The acceptance of tattoo art helps remove former stigma

According to the University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, tattooing has been practiced since the days of the ancient Egyptians, although the pharaohs and their gang must have called it some other word. Tatau is a Tahitian word, and ta-tu the Marquesan word that Captain Cook's sailors brought back from their 18th-century travels to Polynesia, where tattooing held great cultural significance on most of the far flung islands of the South Pacific. Sailors became the first segment of western populations to go for tattoos in a big way. Veterans of overseas wars and convicts followed.

I'm not a fashion critic, nor am I related to any, and, yes, I do have immediate family with tatoos.....and I think they generally look ignorant.

Especially lots of them.

And wall-to-wall is beyond ignorant, and I'm convinced, somewhere well into psycho land.

Agreed. Oh, how much I do agree!

Where I live, it is beyond stupid because tatooed folks seem to want to dress to show the body art, so they wear very few clothes -- and revealing ones at that. This leaves them in danger of freezing to death during 2/3 of the year.

A tattoo is an advertisement of its bearer's stupidity. It's just one of the distressing artifacts of the Age of Vulgarity.

I saw a young gal, probably in her 20s, in the locker room the other day with a big ornate tattoo on her perfectly flat belly. It made me want to giggle because I thought about what that was going to look like in about 15 years. I don't care how fit you are. After 35, belly issues are just a reality for women (and most men).

I've never been drunk enough to think a tattoo was a good idea.

Otzi the Iceman, a 5,000-year-old mummified man uncovered in the Austrian Alps in 1991, bore at least 57 tattoos.

The practice of body art spans time and human cultures. A contemporary Maori man in New Zealand with traditional “moko” facial tattoos.

I simply don't understand the complete lack of self esteem that would make one in this culture want to permanently deface his or her own body in order to: a) fit in, b) stand out, c) emulate felons, or d) freeze yourself into a fashion that is counterproductive and unflattering. But then again, I don't "get" multiple piercings and gauging, either. These are people who aren't confident enough to stand as themselves, without artifice, and have to make their costumes (or masks) speak for them. Sad.

Ignorance is probably the best explanation.

That's funny; I would say the same thing about the preppy flip-flops and ruffled miniskirts that are so prevalent today...

I happen to like tats, and the folks I know with them are extremely intelligent and creative. The attitude towards them in the 'younger' generation is very different from those who were raised when only sailors and carnies had them.

Now, it's more mainstream in many regions.

"Wall to wall is beyond ignorant....somewhere into psycho land."Your correct.I read a good book a few years back(re criminal mentality/anti-social behavior),and excessive tatooing is strongly(but not 100%)indicitive of sociopathy.
