Super rich hedge fund managers are buying 'secret boltholes' where they can hideout in the event of civil uprising against growing inequality, it has been claimed.
Nervous financiers from across the globe have begun purchasing landing strips, homes and land in areas such as New Zealand so they can flee should people rise up.
With growing inequality and riots such as those in London in 2011 and in Ferguson and other parts of the USA last year, many financial leaders fear they could become targets for public fury.
Robert Johnson, president of the Institute of New Economic Thinking, told people at the World Economic Forum in Davos that many hedge fund managers were already planning their escapes.
He said: I know hedge fund managers all over the world who are buying airstrips and farms in places like New Zealand because they think they need a getaway."
GettyAustralian outbackHideaway: Rich people are plotting to escape to remote parts of the world Mr Johnson, said the economic situation could soon become intolerable as even in the richest countries inequality was increasing.
He said: "People need to know there are possibilities for their children that they will have the same opportunity as anyone else.
"There is a wicked feedback loop. Politicians who get more money tend to use it to get more even money."
He added: "I think the rich are worried and they should be worried. I mean inequality, why does it matter?
"Most people have heard the Oxfam statistics that now weve got 80, the 80 richest people in the world, having more wealth that the bottom three-point-five billion, and very soon well get a situation where that one percent, one percent of the richest people have more wealth than everybody else, the 99."

That, and they advocate for others to live more austere and spartan lives.
From within the contradictory confines of their sprawling mansions.
It’d be great if they practiced what they preached.
I do so love when the liberal glitterati tell me how to live an ecologically friendly life from within their by-their-own-definition-ecologically-unfriendly compounds with their gates and armed security.
If you took all the money and wealth from the rich and gave it to the poor....
The rich would have it all back in five years.
But that's true.
Look at what Icelanders did to the bankers who screwed them over? They had them arrested, jailed, and taken to court!
This is what they are afraid of!
I know, lets double down on socialism and crony capitalism.
Not if you just shot the rich....That's what the Bolsheviks did.
This is not news.
the super rich have already converted much of their US dollars and other currencies to hard assets and precious metals. These people are not stupid. They control it all and know by their creative scam that the fiat US dollar and other currencies are worthless on their face. When the oligarchs collapse the world’s monetary system they will be able to hide because most everyone else in the world will be concentrating on trying to survive day to day. The world’s oligarchs are counting on that. Beside, they’ll have the country’s military protecting them in what ever country they decide to hide in.
Just going all John Galt.
But they have not the least idea of WHY John Galt chose to vacate his place in the world. These people are running in fear, for their property, or their lives, or perhaps just something at ephemeral as their reputations.
The Galts of the world are simply disgusted and have given up on the vast majority of the human race and their petty avarice.
Other super rich too in New Zealand? Bill Gates on Mount Doom... There is a picture
I don’t think this is really anything new or even news at this point in time.
If you ain’t preppin’ and live where it makes more sense to ‘bug out’.... you lay out an escape path.
People know there is a violent revolt coming, what do you all think those FEMA camps are for? Celebrities?
And it worked out so well for Russia!
;-)
Stupid article.
Butthole, boltholes.
that sir, is one of the funniest, pithiest, best comments in the history of FR....very well done!
If you're talking about net worth, perhaps.
But if you're talking about baseline standard of living, it's not.
