Apple Commercial: You Better Burn That Flag...
Apple TV Commercial | Current | Orwell's: Who Needs You.

Posted on 01/11/2015 4:14:14 PM PST by ziravan

Lyrics to song on current Apple Commercial:

"Who Needs You" by The Orwells.

You better toss your bullets You better hide your guns You better help the children Let 'em have some fun You better count your blessings Kiss mom and pa You better burn that flag Cause it ain't against the law!

You better pledge your allegiance You're not the only one Listen up forefathers I'm not your son You better save the country You better pass the flask You better join the army I said: "no thank you, dear old uncle Sam!"

You better toss your bullets You better hide your guns You better help the children Let them have some fun, some fun, some fun!

> How big a response? Who knows, but one thing is certain -- if they were bold enough (or dumb enough) to insult so many of their loyal customers with this ad, they'll do it again. Especially if the public response is tepid or negligible.

Well, Apple customers aren't about to start pitching their Macs in the rubbish, or tossing their iPads or iPhones in the nearest trash bin. Among other things, they cost a fair amount more than a couple of record albums, and are a heck of a lot more essential to daily life than the albums.

But I do think we'll see some strongly-worded hashtags. It's the no-cost, painless, modern way to express one's discontent.

We've become a nation of hashtaggers. Gawd, it makes me sick.

Apple had better watch out. They risk a lot with moves like this one.

An “Apple joke?” pretty offensive “joke.”

You sure seem uneasy about that post, not only are you the only one offended enough to remark on it, you seem deeply, deeply disturbed and uncomfortable because of it.

It wasn’t aimed at anyone, it’s a fairly generic Apple joke, it wasn’t about you, and besides, as you told us, you have a girlfriend, you need to let it go and move on with your life.

You have angrily complained to me in five posts so far, something is bothering you at a deeper level than it should be, you should try to lighten up, no one was actually accusing you of being homosexual because you use Apple.

Man, you have some issues that you need to learn to get over or at least conceal, your level of discomfort about that crack that was a throw away joke line on a thread, and posted hours before you even showed up, should not be taken so absurdly personal by you, your reaction is a little creepy.

Funny that you pretend to see that out of a single joke sentence, and ignore the guy who actually seemed fixated on homosexuality....I wonder why?

You do realize that what is said in the header of this article IS NOT IN THE SONG sung in that commercial? The lyrics sung in that commercial were not the song you are referring to but a heavily edited version of that song. . . which left most of that song on the cutting room floor. It does not promote the song. . . they are promoting their PRODUCT.

Considering that the song as it appears on YouTube runs over 3 minutes, and the commercial is 1 minute, obviously the song had to be heavily edited.

I never said the most offensive lyrics weren't edited out.

My point was that just the use of a commercially available song (as opposed to something generic and untraceable, or a song that was written just for the commercial) is promotion of a sort.

A person sees the commercial, likes the style of the song even though he might not be able to understand the lyrics (with that song, it's tough), finds out who did it, and navigates to iTunes to get the whole thing. That's promotion. And from that point on, at least for a while, when he hears that song, or even one in a similar style, he will think about iPads.

Creating those connections, either conscious or subconscious, is what advertising people strive for in an effective ad.

When you hear someone with an Aussie accent, do you ever suddenly find yourself thinking about a little green lizard selling insurance?

And you said in another post down thread...

Given the background of the song, I would not have chosen it. The Ad Agency apparently did. . .

Do you really think the ad agency didn't submit that commercial to Apple for approval?

But it's possible that Apple missed the connection. It's happened before (e.g. the Navy's use of the Village People's song "In the Navy" in a recruitment ad). At the time, it was a real blunder. Today, well, that's another issue!

Swordmaker is Apple first, Apple second, and Apple third.
No matter what, he will defend that company to the last.

He will lightly tap their wrist, try to find a spin where it’s not their fault, and then launch into how everyone is an “Apple hater”.

Since he posts nothing else on FR, I’m wondering if he is more of some Apple marketing rep, and not even an actual conservative.

First thing you need to know about the Apple gang on FR is that their mentality regarding that company is similar to the behavior you see with leftists with Obama.

The language they use, the “shaming” techniques to try to paint anyone that criticizes them as the same as a “bigot”, constantly regurgitating excessive praise, and going to extremes to not find fault with anything they do.

For him, you were basically using a racial slur. It’s bizarre for sure.

I could barely Make Out the lyrics in the song...

I had to listen about twelve times to get them, so much my girlfriend got angry with my repetition of it, as I was trying to hear what they were singing. Very subliminal.

Ok, maybe I got a bit carried away with the scenario. You're probably correct, but there's no telling how many Americans will consider this the 'straw that broke the camel's back' with their loyalty to Apple.

With all the other assaults we normal Americans are enduring under Obama, something like this comes as a totally needless provocation, and yet another knife in the back to our basic sensibilities from the malicious left wing.
