'Interstellar,' 'The Interview,' And The Most Disappointing Films Of 2014
Forbes ^ | December 26, 2014 | Scott Mendelson

These ten films are not remotely the worst films of 2014, but their respective artistic failures were the most disappointing.

This is arguably the most subjective list of my year-end wrap up, with the caveat that of course all of my "best/worst" lists are as subjective as any critical analysis. None of the films on this list belong anywhere near a "worst-of" rundown, but in some ways they were more explicitly dissatisfying than the actual films I chose as the "worst" or "least favorite" films of 2014. Some were genuinely bad, some were mostly good save for a few key artistic stumbles, and all arguably represented either the tragic letdown of a much-anticipated project or a failure in execution of what looked like a surefire winner on paper. The first nine are in alphabetical order, followed by the so-called "biggest disappointment of 2014." And here we go...

I just watched The Interview via the internet ... seriously raunchy, certainly a b-comedy ... kinda like “drunk and drunker” ...

I could tell that much just watching Seth Rogan on different shows, and how he presents himself. Sort of an unwashed, overweight Adam Sandler, Wannabe-Hipster. Obviously, that resonates with a lot of like minded people.

If I could put a description of him into as few words as possible they would be “no redeeming social or intellectual value.”

As my grandpa use to say: There is no accounting for taste.

Personally, I liked Interstellar a lot. It is one of those long films that does not seem long.

I don’t care to see Interstellar, so for anybody that has, I know the reason for them going into space was because the Earth was dying, but what were they looking for? Some alien technology to restore it? A planet to colonize? Was the planet picked out via telescopes and Hubble, or did they have sensors that could determine a planet’s atmosphere on it? I saw they were in stasis, was that from initial vector out of the solar system or longer? How long were they in warp space? What technology allowed them to travel so fast? How was McConaughey’s character selected to travel? How about the black hole? Did they use it for a slingshot, or actually go through it? If they went through it, was there spaghettification?

I have tons of questions about the movie and can probably look up the answers to all of them and more, but I’d rather ask a FReeper about it.

I also saw a video interview of Neil Degrasse Tyson talking about it, but it wasn’t very informative about it. Probably because he didn’t want to talk about spoilers about the whole movie, but it was at least informative about some of the science parts.

After viewing a trailer for “interstellar”, I was left shaking my head at the stupidity of the last sequense:

They have travelled a gazillion miles in a highly advanced spacecraft; well engineered for the job, including landing on the surface of planets in all sorts of bad conditions. They target a place to land on water, and didn’t realize that a mountain range was actually a wall of water? Were they as poorly equiped to deal with a surprise as the ‘s.s. minnow’?

Pathetic.

You got it in a nutshell. It’s for the 34 year old single guy who wants to let his inner 14 year old sit in the Driver’s Seat.

I liked it, but I did have problems hearing the dialog in many parts of the movie, and I would have adjusted the end just a bit to make it clear he goes back to the planet where the girl is (maybe just show the light of the spaceship entering the atmosphere)

Interstellar was a really good movie. McConaughey was excellent and really stretched your imagination. Christopher Nolan is one of the few conservative directors in HomoWood.

He just has that “stoner voice” and timbre that resonates with adolescent boys as “cool.” I’m guessing he’s not really intelligent on the IQ scale myself.

Prior to the earth having its problems a wormhole had shown up near Jupiter. Probes through the wormhole showed a number of possible worlds to colonize, then things got ugly here, and other missions are sent out, and Interstellar is basically the final make or break “figure out where we’re going to live” with a library of genetic material mission.

Most of your questions are answered by “wormhole”. I’m not sure what all the complaints are about the movie. I didn’t have a problem with the sound. And as for the characters and plot, it’s a Nolan movie, you either like them or you don’t, and the people who don’t probably should stop whining.

I happened to see interstellar on Christmas day. A pretty big letdown. Tries to be a modern day 2001 but comes up way short. The best character in the movie is a robot.

I have not seen Interstellar yet, but I believe I have the important plot points. The Earth is experiencing crop failure except for corn. A wormhole has opened up near the planet Saturn. A spaceship is built. They travel to the wormhole and then in. After that my information is less. It looks like the astronauts have trouble at the other side of the wormhole.

I think the “trick” of the movie is that the wormhole was created by human from the future.

The movie looks like The Grapes of Wrath meets 2001 meets Solaris(the book).

they weren’t joking ... even the best scenes (about 2) were way too brief (5 seconds each) ... would you spend 1.5 hours watching a movie that only had 10 seconds worth of worthwhile movie ?

The Interview sucked deek.

Not even a two bit film, with a single memorable line.

I want my two hours back. The friend who rented it can deal with the $5.99 he paid, on his own.
