I don’t care to see Interstellar, so for anybody that has, I know the reason for them going into space was because the Earth was dying, but what were they looking for? Some alien technology to restore it? A planet to colonize? Was the planet picked out via telescopes and Hubble, or did they have sensors that could determine a planet’s atmosphere on it? I saw they were in stasis, was that from initial vector out of the solar system or longer? How long were they in warp space? What technology allowed them to travel so fast? How was McConaughey’s character selected to travel? How about the black hole? Did they use it for a slingshot, or actually go through it? If they went through it, was there spaghettification?

I have tons of questions about the movie and can probably look up the answers to all of them and more, but I’d rather ask a FReeper about it.

I also saw a video interview of Neil Degrasse Tyson talking about it, but it wasn’t very informative about it. Probably because he didn’t want to talk about spoilers about the whole movie, but it was at least informative about some of the science parts.

Prior to the earth having its problems a wormhole had shown up near Jupiter. Probes through the wormhole showed a number of possible worlds to colonize, then things got ugly here, and other missions are sent out, and Interstellar is basically the final make or break “figure out where we’re going to live” with a library of genetic material mission.

Most of your questions are answered by “wormhole”. I’m not sure what all the complaints are about the movie. I didn’t have a problem with the sound. And as for the characters and plot, it’s a Nolan movie, you either like them or you don’t, and the people who don’t probably should stop whining.

I have not seen Interstellar yet, but I believe I have the important plot points. The Earth is experiencing crop failure except for corn. A wormhole has opened up near the planet Saturn. A spaceship is built. They travel to the wormhole and then in. After that my information is less. It looks like the astronauts have trouble at the other side of the wormhole.

I think the “trick” of the movie is that the wormhole was created by human from the future.

The movie looks like The Grapes of Wrath meets 2001 meets Solaris(the book).

If you really want to enjoy Interstellar you've got to change your mindset. Don't expect it to make sense.

Just tell yourself that Black Holes are magic, and anything is possible if you can get into one. There are no limits on time and space and no paradoxes to overcome. Harness it and you are god.

Everything you ask was addressed. I’d just see the movie. It’s not that bad, it’s just not that good.

I would say on a success/budget x starpower basis, Interstellar was the most disappointing film of the year. It LOOKED great. It SOUNDED great. The story - muddled, maudlin, overblown and just too lengthy.

My favorite character was the robot, which was of a very imaginative design.

from what I have read they discover a wormhole at the edge of the solar system and send the ship through. I would suppose they had sent probes through first to see what was on the other side.

There were several potentially habitable planets on the other side of the wormhole the aliens put in our solar system.
One of them turned out to be habitable, but several explorers died.
The weaker part of the plot was the time warp connection back to earth and the endless “love conquers space and time” conversations.

(Yeah, blast from the past.)
Just saw it, and found Interstellar amazing. Compelling plot, great character development, engaging drama, stunning visuals, creative problems and solutions. The answers to all your questions are well answered in the movie, and answering them here would take as long as just watching it.

You could fly a spaceship thru a few key plot holes, but they are very forgivable being such a compelling story.
