From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.
No matter what, you wont be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isnt asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!
NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.
Mrs. Don-o, this is MOST helpful! Thanks so much!
I just realized, while researching heirloom peppers, that I most likely accidentally created a hybrid or crossbreed pepper last year. I had two Santa Fe Grande plants, that put on several peppers that were completely mild, sweet peppers. I grew the Santa Fe Grande plants in containers, in proximity to an Anaheim and a Red Beauty Bell. I still have three of the crossbred SFG peppers frozen, and I will plant some of the seeds next month. They were very good prolific sweet peppers.
It will be interesting to see how that works out.

I can deal with cold weather .... as long as there is no significant snow and it’s looking like a lot of snow is possible this coming winter. The only positive I can think of to snow is that I have great boots! Last year I bought some really serious neoprene, knee-high boots from a farm supply store - made for farmers with muddy barnyards, etc. (they make similar boots for hunters). The couple of times I wore them last year, they were wonderful - could shovel snow without getting cold, wet feet and legs. I’m seriously thinking of putting the scraper blade on the big tractor for the winter ..... we have a long driveway & can easily get snowed in. In the meanwhile, I’m making crockpots of soup and freezing in containers - nothing like a hot cup/bowl of “comfort” soup after hours outside, dealing with Gorebal Warming. :-)
Am in Ithaca New York. SNOW YESTERDAY, DIDN’T STICK. TEMP TODAY IN 40S. MISS TEXAS WEATHER. LEAVING HERE TOMORROW HEADING SOUTH.
MARCELLA
Thank you for this- they have a quite extensive selection of sweet peppers, including several that I haven’t seen elsewhere. Their PP101 Topepo Rosso is promised to have a huge yield, thick flesh, and have a very sweet taste. I will definitely try that one.
I have tried marigolds but not enough steady sunlight for them. Bummer as they are so pretty. Also transplanted Swiss Chard into the vegetable planter. Lettuce will do fine there as well.
Get back here..Prissy can't be liking having to go out to do her business in that kind of weather.
I’m so sorry. :(
What a shame!
I guess that we’re really going to need that firewood this winter, though.
We ordered several pepper and tomato seed packets from this company. All turned out bushels of produce. Trinidad scorpion peppers were overwhelming. We also got paprika and poblano peppers that are still in the garden (maybe for one or two more days.) I dryed the paprikas and ground them into powder—wow.
Enjoy !

I pulled the row cover off the 3 rows of Chinese early red garlic
Ican deal with cold weather, but I just don’t like to. I hate the bulk of a winter coat, and my car’s heater is not great.
I like to stay in and drink coffee or teas. Eat soups or beans, relax and look at seed catalogs.
LOL. Good idea. The sooner the better, the cold is breaking out all over.
That ia a bummer. I really like to see marigolds in and around my tomatoes.
Well, we will figure something out.
