Soda causes our cells to age as much as smoking does, study finds

Drink a 20-ounce soda daily, and you may be causing your cells to age as much as they would if you smoked, a study suggests. Researchers investigated DNA from 5,309 adults, focusing on telomeres, the caps on the ends of our cells' chromosomes, Time reports.

Pellegrino also comes in flavors. I'm pretty sure it's much healthier than soda pop.

“non-carbonated “sugar-sweetened beverages” weren’t associated with telomere length.”

They go from that to quoting the author of the study about the danger of the “The extremely high dose of sugar”.

At the very most, this reveals a possible reason for further study. They MIGHT have found a correlation, but are far from causation.

I can’t look at the cells but I can say smokers LOOK older and ragged than non-smokers and cola drinkers.

I prefer that to soda pop. Especially the Limonata.

In other words:
"Oh gee, smoking has diminished and the taxes are tanking from sales, what should we do? Soda is bad, yeah, soda is bad...we can sin tax that with a fine study or two"

I quit drinking sodas over a decade ago and I have never felt better. If people choose to drink sodas then that’s fine with me because I’m no Nazis liberal that want to deny people drinks, food and beverages. However, drinking sodas is not something I would encourage people, especially young kids to do very often because it’ll probably effects their quality of life in the long run. Some people take more care of their cars than their own body and its a shamed that some of these very same people complain about how they are feeling in their bodird but do nothing to change that with simple non dramatic diet changes

Carbonated seltzer water has zero everything - no sodium, sugar or sweeteners.

Diet Coke is my coffee - has been for years.

I’m probably a dead woman walking.

No worries. Buried far from the lede is this gem:

Researchers also looked at the effects of diet soda and fruit juice on telomeres; while "100 percent fruit juice was marginally associated with longer telomeres," they write in the American Journal of Public Health, diet sodas and non-carbonated "sugar-sweetened beverages" weren't associated with telomere length.

Here's the article in the American Journal of Public Health:

http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2014.302151?journalCode=ajph

And here's the report from U.C. San Francisco:

http://www.ucsf.edu/news/2014/10/119431/sugared-soda-consumption-cell-aging-associated-new-study

From the latter:

“Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas might influence disease development, not only by straining the body’s metabolic control of sugars, but also through accelerated cellular aging of tissues,” said Elissa Epel, PhD, professor of psychiatry at UCSF and senior author of the study.

What qualifies a professor of psychiatry to be the senior author of a study of telomere length?

Well, hell, I am good to go for 100+.

Never smoked, stopped drinking all carbonated stuff other than beer decades ago.

Living causes your cells to age so I think it’s high time we banned living.

I have long advocated that every hospital delivery room be required to post signs easily seen where a new born can read them as he pops his head out, saying:

CAUTION!
LIVING MAY BE
HAZARDOUS
TO YOUR HEALTH!

Give the kid the opportunity to climb back in. . . or to come on out and take his chances in the wild, woolly world and consider him duly warned!

Yes ...good info. Here in Texas we had a Dr Pepper bottling company in Dublin Texas that used cane sugar. We used to drive down there from the panhandle an buy a couple cases. Stuff was much better than the corn syrup.

Soda is loaded with High Fructose Corn Syrup. That's bad enough but it's the PH of soda that is the real killer. The PH of human blood is 7.4, it's no coincidence that this is the PH level we also keep swimming pools at, it's the range where the least "germs" of all sorts grow. But in the case of drinking soda, we are not concerned about germs, there's something more dangerous, PH, let's look:

Human Blood - pH at 7.4
Root Beer - pH at 4.24
Sprite - pH at 3.29
Mountain Dew - pH at 3.27
Pepsi - pH at 2.61
Coca-Cola - pH at 2.52

The pH scale is logarithmic and as a result, each whole pH value below 7 is ten times more acidic than the next higher value. For example, pH 4 is ten times more acidic than pH 5 and 100 times (10 times 10) more acidic than pH 6.

Your body can not handle this low PH, it's acidic, therefore it must buffer it and excrete it. It does this by binding it to Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium. The most important minerals needed for life. And when it comes to Magnesium and Potassium most Americans are already deficient. Magnesium and Potassium regulate your heart beat among other things. Magnesium prevents and can even remove arteriosclerosis yet soda drinkers are flushing it out of their body by the bucket load. To top it off all that sugar is causing inflammation, the key indicator and cause of heart disease (not cholesterol), too bad they are flushing all that mag and potassium down the drain. It's a perfect storm scenario for the human body in a real, real bad way.

Back to that logarithmic scale of PH mentioned above. It takes 40 or 50 glasses of water to balance out a single can of coke back to normal PH, a soda drinker never reaches the 7.4 throughout their body.

The human body will leach Magnesium, Potassium, Calcium out of your bones, muscles, anywhere it can to keep your blood level PH at 7.4 or else you die, and quickly. The damage is devastating. When a doctor draws blood and checks your electrolytes and says your fine, he/she could be deadly wrong, your entire body might be devoid of these important minerals except for your blood. Cancer also begins to take form in your soda ridden, acidic body.

Soda is a poison, pure and simple ... If you drink it I don't care, just wanted to let you know the consequences
