Sunshine tied to suicide risk: study

Fri, Sep 12 2014

By Andrew M. Seaman

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Exposure to sunshine over a short period of time may increase the risk of suicide but may also lower the risk over several months, suggests a new study from Austria.

People shouldn’t avoid the sun based on the study’s findings, says its senior author. Instead, they may consider adding sunshine to the list of factors that may influence the risk of suicide.

“Suicide is complicated and has many risk factors,” said Dr. Matthaeus Willeit from the University of Vienna.

“People always tend to think of it in either biological or social terms, but there is no single cause,” he said. “It’s a bunch of risk factors that you have. That is just one of many risk factors.”

I get really depressed when I get too much sunshine. I have always been happier in rainer climates.

That's Larry Miller, "The Five Levels Of Drinking"

I'm drinking water right now, but maybe I'll switch to tequila :-)

Reversed Seasonal Affective Disorder occurs in the summer. “Normal” SAD occurs in the winter.

Classic Larry Miller routine... remember when Comedy Central was The Comedy Channel and actually broadcasted stand up and sketch comedy? Kinda like how MTV used to actually play music videos.

Mom, it’s the same idea as SSRIs or other antidepressants increasing the risk of suicide in the short term — explanation is that it increases the energy level in otherwise enervated individuals so suicidal ideation becomes manifest as behavior. Well known phenomenon especially in adolescents and teens. The article points out that impulsivity may increase also; a deadly combination for some experiencing a depression-fatigue syndrome.

It’s the combination that’s deadly:

Breathing, eating, sleeping, walking in the sun.

Everyone in history who did those 4 things at some time in their life has died.

It’s a scientific fact.

(Now, where’s my grant money?)

And here I thought SAD - Seasonal Affect Disorder - was caused by lack of sun. That was what made people depressed.

I started my college education by majoring in psychology. Then I switch to computer science because at least computer science made sense. Psych was all bull.

“sunshine over a short period of time may increase the risk of suicide but may also lower the risk over several months”

This actually makes sense in view of the discovery of “Blue light receptors” in the eyes that are not wired to the visual area of the brain but instead to the areas that regulate energy, alertness, wakefulness, and mood.
If someone is depressed and suicidal, and experiences a sunny day with blue sky, they may suddenly have the energy to act on the suicidal urges. After a while of sunny weather their depression goes away and the risk of suicide drops.
Keep in mind that white light (sun light) also contains the blue spectrum, and that green is just blue and yellow combined.
Very bright green light probably would have a similar effect.

We are so wonderfully complicated. What makes our attitudes change moment to moment? Stubbing a toe, hormones, whatever. Do you have a reference for your post? I am very interested in prevention.

I thought it was proved that long periods w/o sunshine caused depression/blues.

It is an indisputable fact that every person who commits suicide has at one point or another in his life been exposed to sunlight.

This study shows there is a clear need for government action to prevent this dangerous exposure. People will need to be rounded up and sent to live in caves from the moment of birth. Since there aren’t sufficient naturally occurring caves to handle the current population massively expensive contracts awarded to favored insiders will be necessary to build artificial caves.

Deniers will have to be silenced for encouraging others to eschew the government’s efforts to protect them from sunlight exposure.
