In a TED 2014 talk earlier this year in Vancouver, microbial ecologist Rob Knight explained that the bacteria, or microbes, on skin produce different chemicals, some of which smell more attractive to mosquitoes.

[....]

But there's an equalizer for those that naturally draw swarms of mosquitoes. The same pests are attracted to beer drinkers.

I almost never am bitten. My late mother, however, couldn’t open the door for a split second without being bitten. Big honkin’ welts too — from head to toe.

I drink beer to deal with the bites, then I get more bites. It’s a vicious circle.

People that draw mosquitoes are pests who are also drawn to beer drinkers ;?

When everyone at the picnic is scrambles to cover up and use OFF and I’m not bit once.

Count me as one that mosquitoes don’t like.

Fleas and even biting flies never bother me either.

I get bitten quite a lot. Strange thing though they only like to bite my ankles and feet.

Apparently Jack Daniels does nothing to ward them off......

but I have noticed that many of them fly into trees or rocks after they bite me.

I remember a family friend telling us that the reason he didn’t suffer from mosquito bites was that he was a Scotch drinker. As a kid I took his word for it and couldn’t wait to be old enough to drink Scotch as well. I grew older and learned that our friend would probably too soused to notice the bites ;’)

Listerine spray on exposed skin - the original yellow kind. Works great. If you do get jabbed by a mossie dab ammonia on it.

Here’s a way to get rid of mosquitos while at the beach..

Rub down with beer or other alcohol..

the mosquitos get drunk and quarrelsome and kill each other throwing r4ocks..

I remember someone saying it was according to blood type. The more common the blood, the more often one gets bit.

Hmmm. How does the mosquito know your blood type before it bites you ....

Day’s Work chewing tobacco. My Dad and I never attracted mosquitoes.

I’ve quit now but still don’t seem much bothered by them.

My wife on the other hand seems to be a magnet to mosquitoes.

Bugs tend to eat me alive. Sometimes there isn’t enough OFF or other bug spray.

I think part of it is immunities you develop as you grow up. I grew up with a lot of mosquitoes around and never got bitten. I would go outside with folks not from the area, and they would all start getting bitten while the mosquitoes ignored me. Figure as I grew up something developed in my blood that was not attractive to them.
