The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you. This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks.

No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked. It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. There is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

Yea, I was astonished it was here when we purchased the home, but it grew into a a monster. It's too big to reach the cherry's anymore though.

The pic was taken twp years ago, and up until this year I was getting a good crop from it. But the dry Winter wasn't kind this year and the only cherry's I see are the one the birds can only reach now.


It really dwarfs everything. It a black cherry tree that was planted by the prior owners. I don't think they realized it would eventually crowd out the fig tree and the plum tree, but it has. I keep it because it's just beautiful.

A lot of times you can keep deer away from your garden by peeing around it.

If you have neighbors don’t like you peeing around your garden, try hanging some strips of cloth soaked in cheap aftershave around.

An electric fence works but you need 2 or 3 strands of wire and tie strips of surveying flagging tape on the wires.

The deer can’t see the wire at night but they can see the tape and will walk up and put their nose to it to check out what it is.

They get that nose on that wire once then pretty much steer clear and avoid it after that.

Until the hurricanes wiped them out I had a lot of pine trees around the house.

With pine trees comes copperheads.

Place used to be crawling with copperheads.

Still see one every now and then but not too often.

That king snake has been hanging around for 2-3 years now I guess and I haven’t seen any copperheads since he’s been hanging around.

He’s about 6ft and 21/2”-3” diameter so he’s big enough to take care of himself with a copperhead.

I do wish that you had an allotment of more than five okra seeds. Sometimes the germination is not so hot, so many folks plant three seeds to the hill - one to push, one to pull, and one to come up. Okra originated from Africa and loves very warm soil. The blossoms are lovely and resemble hibiscus. Clemson spineless is my favorite variety, plus it gets huge and multi-branching. Space generous when planting. I don't know if the soil is warm enough yet for northern planting. Good luck with your experiment.

This is Friday, noon. I have a date with a retired earth physics/geologist this afternoon/evening and tomorrow, so I will be out and not posting when the new thread starts today or tomorrow

YAY!!!! Glad you are having good results! We have a few tiny tomatoes too from our store-bought plants. Didn’t try eggplant this year, although I thought about it!

“The taters need hilled...”

I planted some white taters and they have been growing some gorgeous plants! At what point do I know I need to “hill” them? They look really happy! Do I just cover part of the leaves?

I do know that my sweet potatoes need to have more dirt on top of their vines.(I did that last year. This is my first year for trying white potatoes.)

I am not an expert on anything concerning gardening, just an enthusiastic armature. I pass on what I am doing and hope others may benefit. Most of my learning has come from this weekly thread over the years.

I love seeing the various bird life as I go outside and tend the green babies!

Yesterday I saw a blue splash of jay. We have a little mama Brown Thrasher with a nest right next to my okra sunflower bed.
