She rested in peace for about 2,000 years until utility crews came shortly before Christmas to install a new waterline on Pine Island Road in Davie.

That's when the fully intact skeleton of what is believed to be a Tequesta Indian woman was found — perhaps the best-preserved remains of an ancient human uncovered in the past 40 years, authorities said Thursday.

"It's either Tequesta or the member of a people that predates the Tequesta," said Bob Carr, of the Archaeological and Historical Conservancy in Davie. "It's unusually well preserved, considering it's been under a highway with thousands and thousands of cars going over it every day."

I understand respect for remains but those that pre-date recorded history are part of the common heritage of all of us. We will never understand our roots as a species, the evolution of DNA, illness and disease without scientific access to these ancient findings. Burying the body without analysis robs us all of this important information. Remember that populations of pre-historic man were not that large. One skeleton could give us a lot of information.

I see the two local Casino tribes are claiming ownership, even though neither was in Florida 2000 years ago. This is near the golf course where Caddyshack was filmed. It’s an area of hardwood hammocks which would have been like islands 2000 years ago. Remains have been found there before.

There is another site near Cape Canaveral called Windover where much older remains may be European.
