Among those who have just received the Medal of Freedom from President Obama is Gloria Steinem, who has done as much for advancing abortion-on-demand as any single person in the last half century.
In an interview with The Washington Post, she said, Approximately one in three women in this country needs an abortion at some time in her life. Aside from the dubiousness of this statistic, note that she uses the term needs.
Needs? Laura Enriquez has written convincingly on abortion as a preferential, not medically necessary, condition. What is clear is that what passes for need in the world of Ms. Steinem is actually the desire of a woman in a difficult or inconvenient situation to end a pregnancy.
This is not to say that women make such decisions lightly. Rather, human nature (male and female) being what it is, if a legal option is presented by which one can alleviate something hard, it defies the experience of recorded history that most people will not take it. The roughly 55 million unborn children aborted since 1973 within the 50 states are a grim but irrefutable evidence of that claim.
Here is what Steinem has said about the abortion she had 57 years ago:
It [abortion] is supposed to make us a bad person. But I must say, I never felt that. I used to sit and try and figure out how old the child would be, trying to make myself feel guilty. But I never could! I think the person who said: Honey, if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament was right. Speaking for myself, I knew it was the first time I had taken responsibility for my own life. I wasnt going to let things happen to me. I was going to direct my life, and therefore it felt positive. But still, I didnt tell anyone. Because I knew that out there it wasnt [positive].
Consider her almost unspeakably painful assertion, that taking responsibility for (ones) own life includes taking a life that is not your own. Commentary about such a proposition would be superfluous.
Ms. Steinem has received our nations highest civilian honor, the Medal of Freedom. Yet she remains trapped in her own blindness, a state in which there is no freedom whatever. Christians should pray that in her waning years, she would come to know the true freedom that a forgiving and loving Savior alone can offer.

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions) (see Women's Health partway down the page)
The reasons fewer women died from abortions were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the charts carefully. When did maternal mortality rates start dropping significantly?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)
· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing
· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby
· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child
· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)
· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career
· 7.9% of women want no (more) children
· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health
2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So how many womens lives have been saved by abortion?
Less than 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be due to a risk to maternal health. A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But lets say they did. That means that nearly 55 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.6 million women. Or put another way; 34 babies are killed to save each woman.
Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.

Maybe Satan’s sacrament.

No, worthless Commie sluts never feel guilt. They are guilt personified.
ABORTION IS A SACERMENT to the Femi-nazis!
Medal of Freedom? Didn’t LBJ give one of those to Weinard Von Brum for the spaace race? Didn’t Von Brum also get the Iron Cross from Adolph Hitler for the V-2? I am sure he never wore them together. The medal has been corupted—like the Noble Peace Prize. Its just about Politics of the left now. Watch Michele Obama will get one soon for her work with school lunches! Oprah got one for her work getting Obama elected. The day will come when we are going to need people-—workers and soldiers.
Jim Quinn has always called abirtion “the sacrament of the feminist ‘church’ “.
Prophetic.
Golden calf worshiper.
A woman needs an abortion like a fish needs a bicycle.
In other words, she has been suppressing the guilt ever since. The very fact that she tries to imagine what the kid would be like is an indication of that. Most people after having genuine medical procedures, do not keep obsessing with them afterwards. Another indication of suppressed feelings of guilt is the rabid support and promotion of abortion. It's like they are trying to convince themselves that they did not do evil by having an abortion, because so many other women have had abortions--somehow, larger numbers of co-murderers makes the murder less bad.
No woman who has successfully prevented pregnancy by using contraceptives ever goes around saying that if only she hadn't used the pill 25 years ago, she'd have a kid in college now...
Interesting. The graphs show that even before legalized abortion as birth control, women were *not* dropping like flies from abortion, as the propaganda would have us believe.
One important omission in that list of reasons women choose to have an abortion is the number of women who choose not to use contraceptives because they know that they can easily have an abortion. Most women who have abortions do so because they did nothing to prevent pregnancy. Whatever excuse they give to justify snuffing a life afterwards is irrelevant. The real question is why did they choose to get pregnant when they had no intention of having a living baby?
Gloria Steinem is to women
as
Al Sharpton is to blacks.
Both make their living off of misery while convincing the miserable that they’re fighting for them.
They’d better hope I never get a time machine again. I’ll go back generations before they were born.
She’s eighy, and will be dead soon.
Maybe not, but I often have both men and women tell me that they wish they had had more children when they were able to, instead of making the easier choices at the time.
“[T]he federal government has sustained a loss of $12.3 trillion in revenue due to abortion.” -Steven Ertelt
This assertion takes into account the abortion rate prior to Roe v. Wade, and generational losses due to same. Obviously an approximation, but is it any wonder the United State suffers moral and economic woe when it is so commonplace for mothers to take the lives of their children for the sake of “convenience?”
The arguments against abortion ought to be based predominantly on a moral code that values human life at all stages, not merely for the of economic advancement. The Creator is not arbitrary in bringing about and sustaining human life.
I KNOW what women need. Girls, call 555-555-1212. Leave a provocative message.
We have lots of problems that have been enabled by the women’s movement of the far left for sure.
The graphs show that even before legalized abortion as birth control, women were *not* dropping like flies from abortion, as the propaganda would have us believe.
They deliberately point to statistics from the pre-anti-biotic era to show numbers which seem high now. Most of us born post-WWII don't really appreciate how dangerous any injury could be before those miracle drugs, sterile surgical procedures and other 20th Century medical advances came to be.
They kept deaths, amputations and other complications down from what they could have been through great effort and attention in those days. In comparison it is very easy now to give an anti-biotic shot to someone with an injury or having surgery and nearly forget about infection.
