The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.
This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

Cipro is pretty powerful. Ask your pharmacist to recommend a good probiotic. I am personally fond of the ‘pearl’ ones. You can take them anytime and don’t have to remember to take something in between meals.

I was disquieted to see my 2nd romaine wilt in past couple of days.
Darlin thinks it’s from the heat. It was shocked perhaps. We put it outside in the dirt faster than we did the first one. The first one had quite a bit of growth (at least 3 inches) before I planted it. The 2nd one had only one little sprig of any height (about an inch), with a couple very small sprouts also coming up which I buried when I planted it. I’ll keep watering and see if any sprigs come up.
Also still watering the non-responsive celery stump. It’s almost time to buy celery again, so I might conduct another experiment.
It’s all a Grand Experiment! LOL!

Before I started learning about growing plants this year, I did not know squash was so difficult to grow. If it isn’t various bugs, it’s too much rain. I’ll swear none of that happened years ago when my parents grew squash because we had it to eat all the time. If they had trouble, I never heard about it.
I have that new seed now and I’ll try a few seeds of that, starting them in late August I think, just to see if I can grow them then and to see if growing in a container with net over them will defeat the moths/borers. Normally, we don’t have cold weather until after December. This year, we’ll probably had a deep freeze in September which has never happened.

Darlin’ started showing me stuff years ago, and even though we didn’t garden actively, nevertheless much pointing-out-of-cool-things has occurred over the years. Monarchs are one of the cool things!
Thanks for the hoop house links..I am hoping to do one in part of my garden to extend the season...Yeah, I guess I am dreaming about winter because it was near 100 today.

Re: your parents' squash production: People who are good at things make them look easy. Then, some take-charge moron decides to trade off two experienced people with twice as many new people for cost savings. Then they wonder why production goes down and problems increase. The people who run around their neighborhoods hammering on doors to give away their zucchini excess are to be praised!
Sockmonkey, MissMagnolia has replied to our request for info on cattle panel structures in post 291! I think she is one of the ones who discussed the topic earlier, if I understand correctly.
I’ve been showing Darlin all these links. They are all so clever. Maybe some day I can get one too!
How did you make onion powder?
We made watermelon rind pickles when I was a kid. Also after I marred. The thick rinds work much better.

My daughter had showed it to me recently, but I didn’t know where she found it.
My RICE is blooming. When I saw the blooms at first I was like ‘...what kind of BUG is THAT!?’.
And they smell even more strongly of cooking jasmine rice.
It’s a learning year for me with this crop so if I get back my initial number of seeds I’ll be thrilled. Any more will be lagniappe.
And my fall bell peppers are growing nicely.
We’re up to low teens of number of pumpkins that have set so far. More and more female blooms all the time. I’ll take pictures tomorrow morning.
MY JAW HURTS! Could I get some sympathy from the crowd?
Absolutely you get sympathy- That is a tough thing to deal with when you have to wait for the dentist to be in his office. I hope by now the whole thing is a fading memory.

A few years ago my daughter heard a horrid racket outside, midnight- hubby sleeping soundly. She saw a really large armadillo in the yard tearing things up in general. She went into the bedroom for the shotgun being quiet so as not to wake hubby. Got outside and had no shells. (Normally it was always loaded) Back in the house careful not to wake up hubby. Back outside- big blam, no more armadillo. She did however have one very surprised husband the next morning. One of those cases not a hunter by nature- but also not going to have her yard/flowers/garden torn up either.
Did you know a machine is counting pills now?
Yep- it clanks and clunks and counts, bottles, and labels the pills. And yes it is not a bad idea to count your pills.
