Free Republic | 7/19/2013 | greeneyes

Posted on 07/19/2013 12:45:12 PM PDT by greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread ... there is no telling where it will go and that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

“It made me very chatty and social.”

It makes me chatty, too, and you guys are the only ones I can talk to, except for my Yorkie and she knows something is wrong with me.

“Make sure that you don't go too far with the pain pills. We need your wit around here. Get better.”

I take one every four hours and sometimes I'm watching the minutes due to the high pain level.

Except for telling the dentist to use a chain saw right now, my wit is on stand-by. Dentist said in a case like this when office isn't open, to call the office and his cell phone number is on there and call him. Said I didn't want to bother him on a weekend and he laughed and said it happens all the time.

The throb is coming back and I've got an hour to go before I take another pain pill so turned on heating pad.

I found I could get by with less hydrocodone by taking ibuprofen in between taking the serious stuff, IF the pain was under control. My dentist said that this strategy does indeed work.

I’m not on a “normal” strength of Hydrocodone or I could do that. I have bottles of regular Hydro strength that is usually used for pain. He gave me a super duper strength that is zonking me so I don’t dare add anything to it. I’ve been out of it, sleeping in this recliner since the last one at 11, am just now coming out of that. Next pill is at 3. At some point, after the antibiotic can knock the infection some, the horrible pain will stop happening between pills. Food is instant oatmeal, reduced sugar kind. Don’t really get hungry with this much pain. Eat the oatmeal around time for the antibiotic so it won’t eat up my stomach.

Greeneyes, I cover my plants with row cover for nighttime to keep the squirrels out (net is always on them) but didn’t go out there to remove the cover this morning. Guess they can stand that for one day (?) but will have to remove it tomorrow morning so they can get the sun. I know this row cover says sun gets in there but I doubt that. This week is a waste due to this damn tooth.

Glad you got to the Dentist. Hope the antibiotics kick in fast. Drink lots of water.

Help me with Sweet Potato question at the end of this post.

I've now gone 8 hours without the screaming pain. At 7pm, took another antibiotic and pain pill. Maybe the terrible pain won't come back.

Johnny, I'll put the envelope of seeds in mailing envelope and drop it in the mail tomorrow when I go across street to get the rest of the antibiotic pills.

I need to know if you have started planting fall seeds and if so, what?

TO ALL: Day before yesterday when I was briefly outside, I saw sort of yellowish/tannish “things” that look like mushrooms about three inches tall coming up in the Sweet Potato bucket, think there were three or four. What is that? It can't be potatoes? Have I done something wrong? I had so much pain earlier, I didn't think to tell about these “things” before now.

Lots of potting soil will produce mushrooms. I don't worry about them.

I've started my fall tomatoes, over a month ago. Other stuff will follow at the appropriate time.

Glad your pain is subsiding.
On the mushrooms, I see them almost every morning. Plant store lady said it just means my garden is rich in organic material, but if I hate them to spray a little baking soda mixed with water on them & it will get rid of them.

I have zero experience with sweet potatoes. Sorry I don’t know the answer. Glad to hear that you are out of pain.

If it’s more than 50% sun row cover type, it should be ok for a while. I’ve left mine on for weeks during the winter. As long as your plants don’t need water, it should be ok.

No, I didn’t know a machine does it. I often just look at the bottle to see if it looks like 30 pills. Sometimes I do count them after I get them home. Usually they are ok.

I used a mix of Toy Choi, cilantro, spinach, and radish; the rest came up, but the choi didn’t.

I am soooo excited. My wa wa tsai, and toy choi are up this morning, and my cukes & asparagus beans are already about six inches tall.. I hope the bugs will leave them alone.

The rain ruined my summer squash. Had to get rid of about 10 that turned to mush. Peppers and eggplant seem fine. Some of my tomatoes split but they were still ok to eat if not really pretty.

“No, I didn’t know a machine does it. I often just look at the bottle to see if it looks like 30 pills”

The body of these bottles were completely covered by the label so couldn't see the pills unless I took the top off. Plus, they stapled the bag closed they were in. From now on, I'm going to look at pills before I leave.

This morning there is still pain and it's beginning to throb but it's not at the screaming level and in 50 min. I can take another pain pill. The tooth “operation” is Aug. 2 and I'll be taking antibiotics until then.

If you read responses, it seems those “things” are mushrooms that came up in the Sweet Potato bag.

Didn't have rain yesterday so if rain holds off a few days to dry the dirt, I can get the little fence up in the garden.

Oh wow, SG, I am such a newby, I have not encountered those yet! I’m glad to see that about the wasp, Ellendra.

What I have encountered in past few days is the monarch caterpillars on my parsley. I have decided to sacrifice it to them. They are so pretty, and I haven’t been using the parsley at all anyway. I’ve just been enjoying how pretty it looks!

“I field-dressed and ate dillo. Much like squirrel.”

No flames from me. It is my understanding that if the meat is handled and cooked properly, it should be safe. I guess any wild game could have contaminations, but how would you know?

But what do I know?...I’ve never done that!

“get your garlic from the grocery store, separate the bulbs and plant it.”

I’ve heard that is a distinct possibility, and for sure some of the garlic I’ve purchased in the past has sprouted while it sat in my onion/garlic basket. But I did read recently that sometimes the grocery store garlic is treated with something that inhibits sprouting.

I guess what I need to do, is next time I get a sprouter, I need to just PLANT IT!
