OKLAHOMA CITY — The nation's second-largest Indian tribe said on Tuesday that it would not be dictated to by the U.S. government over its move to banish 2,800 African Americans from its citizenship rolls.
"The Cherokee Nation will not be governed by the BIA," Joe Crittenden, the tribe's acting principal chief, said in a statement responding to the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Crittenden, who leads the tribe until a new principal chief is elected, went on to complain about unnamed congressmen meddling in the tribe's self-governance.
The reaction follows a letter the tribe received on Monday from BIA Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk, who warned that the results of the September 24 Cherokee election for principal chief will not be recognized by the U.S. government if the ousted members, known to some as "Cherokee Freedmen," are not allowed to vote.

That’s what I’ve heard...you’d have to really prove it, and then it’s up to their council.....don’t know ...haven’t heard much other than it’s not a slam-dunk...
Agree also..they have the right...However, I’m not so sure that the reason is preserving cultural and racial heritage rather than diluting the casino take and member payouts...

Funny....I was just looking through some files I’d scattered about my basement workshop...one page was an old typed funeral eulogy for my great-great grandfather, William Lafayette Weems, died 1922 and born in Cherokee County here in Georgia in 1860.....his parents were the immigrants here in Georgia, I think (not sure - there a lot of ‘Weems’ that go back quite a ways)....I digress....my Cherokee roots are from my father’s side of the family from Clinton SC where his daddy was a sharecropper.....my grandmother (his wife) was 1/4 Cherokee...
The Black Caucus is all over this. I always like when two Dem constituencies are at loggerheads. Another headache for Chief Barack.

The Cherokee tribe have been for years trying to get a more stricter way of saying if you’re Cherokee.

I’d say that’s the deal.... You have 3.0005632% of Cherokee heritage going for ya you get 3.0005632% membership....regardless of what color.
