Put the Phosphate Back into your Dish detergent
Self | 6/26/2011 | Self

As many of you have discovered, you automatic dish detergent hasn't been working very well for the past year, leaving a white film on the dishes. Well, the reason, as usual, is the envirowhackos using junk science to claim that algae blooms in rivers are caused by the phosphates in your dish detergent. The phosphates in detergent do NOT cause the algae to bloom because the algae can't break down the trisodium phosphates. So, instead of check out the facts, the detergent companies were more interested in currying favor with the envirowhackos.

Well, there isn't much way to get them to change their mind, especially since it is actually cheaper for them to make phosphate free detergent (never mind it doesn't work), but you CAN replace the phosphates in your detergent. Just go to the cleaner section of your local hardware store and look for Trisodium Phosphate. Home Depot and Lowes both carry it. Just add about a teaspoon to every load and you will get your dishes clean again. This is the cheapest method.

You can also buy Cascade with phosphates from places that sell commercial grade cleaners. Restockit.com is one place. I am sure there are others if you search.

I hate the way the companies bow to the envirowhackos so here is a way to get around the morons.

I heard that you can put this in your laundry also to make a dramatic difference but I don’t know how much per load is recommended.

Make certain that it is REAL tri-sodium phosphate, not the phosphorus free substitute.

You can buy trisodium phosphate from Lowes as well for about $10 a 4 lb box. Does a great job on the clothes. About a tablespoon and a half a load.

Beware that the big box hardware stores are now selling "phosphate free" TSP. Read the box carefully!

Half a teaspoon of caustic soda in each dishwasher load works even better! It is available at brewers supply stores.

Here in Tampa they just passed a law about how homeowners are no longer allowed to have phosphates in fertilizer.

I think this is quite funny because Tampa is one of the largest producers of phosphates in the world.

Do you think that would work if you through it the auto dishwasher?
Personally I am so sick of cleaning products that don't clean. I though it was just me, I really was beginning to think I had imagined clean bathrooms, clean dishes and clothes in the past.

Yes. About a teaspoon or so. I’ve heard borax and the above poster said caustic soda will work too.

Yeah, but don’t you just feel good about yourself when you use phosphate free detergent? Kinda feeds your need for feelings of moral superiority. (sarc)

Was going to start being my clothes on a rock to get them clean. Might just be easier to beat an enviro whacko.

Any time we are in Big Lots, Ollies, or the like I check out the detergent section.
You can still find some old stock around.
We’ve stocked up of the ‘original’.

One caveat. Shake the box, make sure it’s not clotted up.

One addition to your advice. Avoid anything that says "Trisodium Phosphate PF."

It's some kind of environmentally friendly substitute. the PF means "Phosphate Free."

I heard that you can put this in your laundry also to make a dramatic difference but I don’t know how much per load is recommended.

I use a tablespoon full in each load and it works wonders.

Our washer started to smell moldy and we would have to leave the lid up to no avail. Since I started using real TSP in the wash both the washer and our clothes smell nice and clean again and the clothes look much better. Our dishes get clean like they used too since I put a teaspoon in with the soap.

thanks to Blood of Tyrants for posting this,
and for Free Vulcan for the photo.

(i don’t remember if he put the photo on a similar link,
a few weeks ago, to help people avoid the boxes of TSP,
that are “TSP free”.)

but, i’m a single Dad with full custody. and this HELPS!

as others here said, just half a spoon in dishwasher,
full spoon in washer.
my white shirts are the cleanest they’ve been in a long time.

thanks again, and i hope others here try it.
(just duck when the phospate police are around...)
