I'm curious to what Freepers think of Aspartame. Aspartame is an artificial sweetener used in diet products like diet coke.
Many websites, albeit possibly kooky websites, say Aspartame produces side effects like anxiety, blurred vision, depression, etc. The medical establishment and Feds say its heavily tested and safe.
Anyone with an opinion or experience?
My husband has used Stevia for years and loves it. A good alternative to the other chemical sugar substitutes.
I suspect that the breakdown of aspartame is worse in hot beverages, i.e., coffee, tea, etc. For those I use plain sugar.
I drink diet pop instead of “sugar” pop due to the high fructose corn syrup in “sugar” pop. The corn syrup gives my stomach fits.
Sacharin causes severe intestinal distress for some people. I am in that category.
Splenda is OK. My boss is diabetic, his family uses it even in baking, stuff turns out decent.
I have read that stevia interfers with conception
I have no tolerance for artificial sweeteners. Mr. Tri had some numbness in his hands that have completely stopped since he stopped using artificial sweeteners.
Completely anecdotal, but there it is.
I’m diabetic and drink caffeine-free diet Pepsi which has aspertame. I haven’t noticed any side-effects. To sweeten my coffee, I use Splenda.
Awful stuff.
Thanks, I’ll have to try it.
I prefer all natural cane sugar, but I have to make some concessions to my health needs. lol
“I have read that stevia interfers with conception”
.
Do you believe that?
Mechanism?

‘Anyone with an opinion’ ?
LOL! No need to ask Freepers THAT question!
Some interesting information here, certainly some things to think about! It gives my daughter horrible migraines.
Aside from a diabetic needing to find a sweetening substitute, sugar has 15 calories so I put that in coffee. Tea gets honey.
Bubbly stuff is flavored seltzer, but I usually drink water with lemon juice. Don’t do a lot of sugary foods, but when I want cake I eat cake with sugar.
Again, aside from a diabetic, most peeps might be ok with just changing eating/drinking habits and enjoying sugar in small doses.

Aspertame does damage nerve tissue, so there is basis for your anecdote. (useage would need to be heavy, but in the summer...)
Yeah, I get a headache from it also. I hear it’s addictive too - ever wonder why people are addicted to diet soda? Maybe this is why.
My whole family gets headaches. We don’t use anything that has it in. Hubby went to a party and had punch. Got a screaming headache. The host said it was just Hawaiian Punch and ginger ale. Hawaiian Punch has aspartame. Nasty, NASTY crap!
Hope you get better! ;-)
It gives me horrible splitting headaches, even in very small quantities. In fact, it causes my vision to narrow down to a small tunnel-like effect. Painkillers will not even touch it. It also gives me a bellyache. My body reacts very badly to Aspartame. They can say it’s tested and safe all they want, it’s dangerous, and they’re hiding something. It’s all about money. Someone has made, and is making, a ton of money on it, and that’s more important to them than peoples’ health and safety. And I’d bet that they don’t use it themselves, ever!
Lord! Am I the ONLT person on FR that likes Diet Coke? Why the heck do they have so many of them in every store I go in to??
I drink 4-5 a day.. sometimes, I mix Crown Royal with it. yum yum!!!
Health benefits aside, it tastes like crap. Why isn’t there a good, all-sucralose diet soda out there?
As for health issues: It metabolizes into methanol, a substance which causes brain damage and even blindness (as in “blind drunk”). But the amounts are so low as to be insignificant; it’s hard to imagine that the methanol content is responsible for the headaches reported from it, even though headaches are one symptom of mild levels of methanol poisoning.
Aspartame is a poison. Do not consume anything that contains it.
Evidence abounds about this substance, and most all of it is bad.
It produces free radicals in the body. These attack cell formation and growth. Not what I want to put in my body.
Your body chemistry may be such that no effects are ever seen or even implied. I won’t take that chance. See cancer rates, special needs kids birthrate, all kinds of goofy diseases/ailments we get other countries don’t. I don’t use it or any other artificial sweetener or color.
