COLUMBUS, Ohio Cancer cells grow so fast that they can outstrip their blood supply, leaving them short of oxygen. The cells then produce energy in a way that needs less oxygen but more sugar.
Researchers at the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center-Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute have designed an experimental drug that chokes off that sugar supply, causing the cells to self destruct.

Our study proves that this new agent kills cancer cells through energy restriction. This is important because it shows that it is possible to design drugs that target energy restriction, and it is exciting because energy-restricting mimetic agents may also be useful for other diseases, including metabolic syndromes, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity, Chen adds.

To enhance that activity, they altered the structure of the ciglitazone molecule, producing OSU-CG12. Using prostate cancer and breast cancer cell lines, they showed that the new Ohio State agent was 10 times better at killing cancer cells than ciglitazone and a second agent, the drug resveratrol, a natural product found in grapes and red wine that has weak anticancer activity and also works through energy restriction.

Sugar-coated ping.
FYI
Interesting approach.
From the title, I thought this was about the EPA shutting down coal-fired electricity plants, because of carbon emissions.
C'mon, it was the choking part that got ya.

Obesity is not a disease. Its a lifestyle choice.
Often, but not always.
Bingo!
True. I am on several drugs that have caused weight gain. I was never overweight before. Fat and living, or thin and dead.
OK, obesity is a byproduct of a condition or lifestyle.
I just read Anticancer by Dr. David Servan-Schreiber. It is fascinating how what we put in our mouths affects cancer. He points out that hydrogenated oils, partially hydrogenated oils, and sugar feed cancerous tumors. Instead of taking a drug that blocks sugar, he has kept his very aggressive tumor at bay by simply not eating sugar.
that’s a side effect, not a disease.
I should add that he does many other things as well, not just avoiding sugar. He avoids all processed foods and eats mainly veg and fruit. He eats proteins that are very high in omega-3’s and exercises every day.
But if you saw me on the street, you would look at me and sneer, “She’s fat.” Fit, but fat.
YEP. My mother’s thyroids failed at a young age. She has always been big because of it. But obesity is not her disease, just a result of her disease.
Then there are others who are just lazy and constantly cramming food in their mouth in front of the TV. Thats not a disease either. Thats a choice.
I wonder if this is a vector to attack fat cells.
actually, i tend to not think of that unless its brought to my attention.
however if i saw a person at mcdonalds, double fisting big macs, mawing on a superzied order of fries, my instant reaction would probably be “fat” followed by some colourful metaphor.
Cut off the food and it's obvious that a "fat" person will be alive and busy long after all the thin ones have died of starvation...
