No fire in bed. How long did that take to figure out?

Somehow there is a Mel Brooks skit in there.

It's called a cabin today....

I'm trying to figure out what they are trying to prove or disprove

"0"...It's that old Grant Money that just keeps on giving either way.

But when did they start worrying about window treatments?

It is a pity that any sort of cabin/hut that could have been created by H. erectus probably never survived the passage of time.

Huts don’t fossilize very well, though someday I hope they can find some evidence preserved like pompeii of the oldest home builders....

>> But when did they start worrying about window treatments? <<

When they wanted to look outside their cabin, but having a hole in the wall was causing them to freeze.

Curtains were invented before glass windows you know....

And no melting fat flying off the cooking food and landing on naked butts.

Why are we surprised whenever a new archeological find points to the intelligence of our forbears.

I’m not surprised. My ancestors were all brilliant. Mom told me.

This was on a lake shore. They found fish bones. I suspect the woman of the house didn’t want fishy cooking smells in her sitting room.

Although popularly called “cave men”, humans at that time were house builders. It is just what they did in caves and drew on the walls in caves SURVIVED better. Remnants of their post holes for their movable houses are found all over the place.

The impulse to build goes deep within us. As my lovely and smart wife once said “the first things kids do when they play off in the woods is to build a ‘fort’”.

It makes sense that they would want shelter from the elements. And from critters of any number of legs.

But beyond all logical considerations; children playing off in the woods don't need shelter from the element or protection; they have a home for that - but they have the overwhelming urge nonetheless, to build a FORT.

Why? Because humans think building a fort is COOL!

The impulse is deep within us, even absent logical considerations.

And storming the fort and driving off the foreign kids from down the block who built it was even cooler.(At least in my childhood,)

Yeah, but you do want to protect against the next erectus while you sleep.
