Drinking beetroot juice boosts stamina and could help people exercise for up to 16% longer, a UK study suggests. A University of Exeter team found nitrate contained in the vegetable leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake - making exercise less tiring. The small Journal of Applied Physiology study suggests the effect is greater than that which can be achieved by regular training. Beetroot juice has previously been shown to reduce blood pressure.

It is also rumored to be excellent for the liver. Downside is people have gone to the doctor under the idea they had blood in their urine when it was the dye from beets. Even some doctors didn’t know this and order expensive tests to find out why they had pink urine with no traces of blood.

Oh, yum! I think I’ll scurry down to my local beetroot bar and guzzle down a few pints. Yes, indeedy!

I'll just tap into the horses' beet pulp supply to save money.

Wonder how straight beet juice would taste? I use a juicer and if I add beet to the drink, I just add a tiny bit...it adds to the flavor, but too much will taste like you’re drinking “dirt.” Even in bortsch you only use one beet to a whole pot of soup.

Try it with vodka instead of tomato or orange juice.

4 parts vodka to 1 part beetroot juice.

Better yet. Add vodka to your cold beet borscht instead of topping it with sour cream. Yummy!

Try the recipe I posted. It’s not a favorite of mine, but I’ll vouch for it as being pretty tasty.

"A University of Exeter team found nitrate contained in the vegetable leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake - making exercise less tiring."

Decreased oxygen uptake equals less tiring?

Fail.

Holding your breath decreases your oxygen uptake, try it sometime.

Sliced pickled beetroot is a standard hamburger topping in Australia and New Zealand. You want nice, wide, thick slices the same size as your hamburger patty. Coupled with a pineapple ring and a fried egg plus whatever else you want, you’ve got the makings of the Perfect Hamburger...

(Mmmmmm-mmmm! I’ve just made myself hungry!)

Pickled beetroot sounds like an odd thing to add to a Hamburger, but once you’ve tried it every Hamburger you have thereafter will seem incomplete without it.

My son is training for an “Iron Man” event. I sent him the info on this and he ran, biked and swam to the health food store and got his beet juice.

He said he didn’t like the taste but after a practice stent...he felt great!

LOL!
