Bess writes: Surely Icelanders don't believe in Elves? It's a matter of earnest debate on the New York Mag where John Moody, who lives in Iceland responds to this Vanity Fair article on the country's financial meltdown. The debate centres on this VF claim that Alcoa, Iceland's largest aluminium company had to "defer to a government expert" in 2004 while scouring a potential site for a smelting plant to "certify that no elves were on or under it." The writer, Michael Lewis reports "It was a delicate corporate situation, an Alcoa spokesman told me, because they had to pay hard cash to declare the site elf-free but, as he put it,

Yes, but people who hang out with hobbits are just weird.

Quite so...but then, being able to hang out with mythical beings is pretty weird by definition.

That’s clearly some sort of miniature orc, not an elf.

Years ago I read an anecdote about an American schoolgirl who went to Ireland on student exchange; one day her Irish "mother" made reference to the Wee Folk. Surely you don't believe in them, the girl asked, and the "mother" replied, no -- but they exist regardless. :') Folkloric topic, so ping!

John Delorean cut down a sacred Irish tree to build his auto plant.

Look how that worked out for him.

> A belief in elves sounds ridiculous ... but in this country, a lot of people believe in ghosts or other spirit beings, which is probably just as ridiculous. (Or not.)

In New Zealand multimillion-dollar projects are delayed and modified because of “Taniwha” (Tanny-Fah) — a mythological Maori monster rather like a troll. It is taken very seriously by all.

Taking things seriously ... you know, I will confess that when my husband and I bought our first house, I made our realtor do some due diligence about whether anyone had committed suicide in the house, or anything of the sort. She thought I was nuts for asking about it — but I had lived one summer in an apartment which I finally decided was haunted (and still think so, actually) and it was a very unpleasant experience! There are more things in Heaven and earth, Horatio....

(grin!) you’re right about that!

A good friend of mine bought a house in a really nice neighborhood in Auckland about ten years ago. Lived there for a couple weeks and found that he had trouble sleeping. Found out shortly thereafter that one of New Zealand’s most famous Tommy-gun murders had happened IN THAT VERY HOUSE half a century previously.

Later searches found dings in the walls and floorboards where the .45 cal machine gun bullets had made holes and dents and had been filled in.

He and his wife still live there.

some of the terrain in iceland lends itself to any number of imaginings. The berzerkerhraun lava field is one of the most bizarre areas I have ever seen.
