Populist America's commentary:
Are we at last brought to such humiliating and debasing degradation, that we cannot be trusted with arms for our defense? -- Patrick Henry
The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is one of the most mistakenly maligned and intentionally misunderstood of our freedoms. The use of the word "militia" often causes anti-gun groups and individuals to claim the amendment applies only to the National Guard - conveniently forgetting that the National Guard didn't exist when the Constitution was written and that, at the time of the writing, "militia" was clearly defined as "all able-bodied men". The use of the words "the people", of course, are further indicators of the intent for the Second Amendment to apply to individuals (a point agreed upon by the vast majority of Constitutional scholars). Numerous further writings of the framers state in no uncertain terms, lest anyone misunderstand, that the founders fully intended for individuals to be armed, both for self-defense against crime and as a hedge against government tyranny (a note for the "it can't happen here" crowd: Adolf Hitler was freely elected).

I seem to recall the militia being able-bodied men such as farmers, blacksmiths, etc. that could come and go as they please.

It is my understanding, and correct me if I’m wrong, that all able bodied men who are citizens of the US are legally defined as militia. And it is that law which allows for draft in military service.

It is also my understanding that the 2nd was written in the way it was with the understanding that eventually our government would devolved into totalitarianism of one sort or another, and it was the duty of we, the citizens, to take up arms against it.

Our founding fathers had the wisdom to ensure that the government always feared the people and never the other way around.

...shall not be infringed...

That says it all. The right to keep and bear arms is fundamentally ours. The purpose of the 2nd Amendment is to ensure that the government does not attempt to take that right away.

The right to self defense is God given. The 2nd guarantees it.

No gov can demand a man lay down

Firearm registration is next according to the speaker of the house. I guess we are now taking direction from Janet Reno.

I would advise everyone to get a firearm and learn how to use one and if you never need it fine if you need one and don’t have one that won’t be so fine.

How much more ‘registration’ do we need?

For the past several years (at least in the states I’ve lived in) every firearm sold had to be registered with the Feds by the people who owned the store it was purchased in.
