Columnist Calls for removal of NC's Confederate Monument
Raleigh (NC) News and Observer ^ | 8 February 2008 | J. Peder Zane

Yet it remains Raleigh's most prominent piece of public art, a signature symbol with an ugly past representing values and ambitions that no longer reflect who we are.

A crowd of perhaps 30,000 people that included Stonewall Jackson's widow listened as the day's featured speaker, Alfred Moore Waddell, cast the Confederate dead as American patriots.

They were American patriots. They just had a vision of a different America than I do. Their bravery and tenacity should be honored. (Not their cause.)

The reb cause was certainly rotten, but a lot of the soldiers, especially in the Upper South, found themselves between a couple of unpleasant options. I imagine there were quite a number of ordinary Confederate soldiers who went into the war like Robert E. Lee with no regard for the concept of secession and no personal respect for the Deep South idiot politicians who led the South into destruction. But such acknowledgment that all confederate soldiers were not racist monsters to be tarred with eternal guilt does not agree with the agenda of the rabid divisive element of the left.

All of which were democrats.

“The Blues & Disturber (N&O) has been a decades-long shrine for liberal views. It’s the only rag we got, though, unfortunately.”

not much longer I hope...the N&O’s parent company McClatchey(MNI)is swirling the bowl...they also publish the Charlotte N&O.....here’s what Wall Street thinks of their chances for survival....I always feel better when I see this chart.

That jackass Zane has as much right to blame the monument for oppression of NC blacks and Jim Crow as he does the Democrat party, but he won't equally blame THEM because it is from them he has duped a select few into ignorantly hating this piece of historic architecture. It's easy for him to come here and find fault - he has zero ancestral investment in the Old North State and what he's "contributing" isn't fit for lining a birdcage.

"Mr. Zane,

I don't agree you should be quiet. However, weighing your ancestral tie to this state against 5th & 6th generation North Carolinians, it would appear you have the least invested while expecting a tremendous amount in return.

I will give you this story; after being employed for a large firm for years, when I tendered my resignation, the company desired me to train a replacement. Failing to grasp the system, the new person replied to me he would MAKE the company convert from IBM machines to Mac's. (No problem with Mac's disclaimer goes here.) I simply advised him the company had hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in the IBM equipment and only four weeks employment invested in him. Then I asked him, "Which do you think will outlast the other?"

Should we inquire similarly of you?
"

"The will of the majority is restrained by laws that protect the interests of the minority, as we have in a Constitutional Republic."

While plausible in some instances, when applied in these, we'd have no roads, bridges, monuments, airports, etc.

Zane has published only a few snips from responses "in favor" of his lunacy, while he's been deeply scarified by scores of North Carolinians in favor of the Monument. Yet he claims there's a disproportionate amount of response published counter to his proposition and those similarly minded as he need their voices heard. Okay.

LMAO - that's what happens when you, as an outsider, pick the WRONG side of a NONISSUE, publish it before an opposite minded majority, and try to over-inflate it with pure BS.

Zane misunderestimated North Carolinians. BADLY.

so they want to try and ignore history, not a surprise is it.
they have been trying to change history for over a hundred years and make the idiots think the war was just over slavery and that the north got on their white gallant horse to save the blacks from slavery.

we are lucky in my town of st Augustine that we have the town and county who are supportive of our two monuments in the town center.

I’d rather them just go their own way and leave the south, midwest and AK .

I know I will not fight nor will my sons to stop them.

Please add me to the Dixie/confederate ping list.

thanks and lets hope history is not removed and let us hope that history will be taught to the idiots

exactly what I have said.

Here in town we have graves to black confederate soldiers and still have a black family living here who had ancestors for the confederacy.

I try as much as I can to get these tourists here in St Augustine to visit those grave and get them educated and believe it or not but many are in shock they never knew about hem fighting or that Lincoln never had any intention to free slaves at the beginning.

These are the same people who say the south were traitors and yet the ones in the revolution was not.
Or the same ones who think it was Revere who wanted everyone and who completed his ride when infact he never did nor was it a massacre in Boston

Removal of the monument might not be a bad deal if the law also includes renaming all the Martin Luther King streets
